Advance Tax Payment Checklist

A checklist to estimate, schedule and pay advance tax instalments and avoid interest.

ADVANCE TAX PAYMENT CHECKLIST

For FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27) · Payable when total tax liability exceeds Rs. 10,000 in a year

Estimate the Liability

  • ☐ Project total income from all heads for the full year
  • ☐ Choose the applicable regime (old vs new) before computing
  • ☐ Add expected capital gains, dividend and interest income
  • ☐ Reduce eligible TDS/TCS and rebate under Section 87A
  • ☐ Confirm whether senior citizens without business income are exempt

Instalment Schedule

  • ☐ 15% of tax by 15 June 2025
  • ☐ 45% (cumulative) by 15 September 2025
  • ☐ 75% (cumulative) by 15 December 2025
  • ☐ 100% by 15 March 2026
  • ☐ Presumptive (44AD/44ADA) – pay 100% by 15 March in one instalment

Payment & Records

  • ☐ Pay through Challan 280 (minor head 100 – advance tax)
  • ☐ Quote correct PAN, assessment year and head of tax
  • ☐ Save the challan CIN / BSR code for each instalment
  • ☐ Verify credits appear in Form 26AS after a few days

Review

  • ☐ Recompute at each instalment for revised income estimates
  • ☐ Check exposure to interest under Section 234B and 234C for shortfall

Interest under Section 234C applies to shortfall in any instalment and 234B applies if less than 90% of assessed tax is paid by 31 March; pay any balance as self-assessment tax before filing.
