Key offer-letter terms explained
CTC vs Gross vs Take-home
CTC (cost to company) is the total annual cost of employing you — it includes employer PF, gratuity, bonus and benefits. Gross salary is your pay before deductions, and take-home is what reaches your bank after PF, professional tax and TDS. The offer letter usually quotes CTC; use our salary slip generator to see the monthly split.
Probation period
An initial period (commonly 3 to 6 months) during which either side can end employment on shorter notice. On successful completion the role is confirmed and full terms — including the standard notice period — apply.
Offer letter vs Appointment letter
An offer letter extends the job and headline terms and asks the candidate to accept. Once accepted (and often after joining), a detailed appointment letter or employment agreement sets out full terms, policies and duties. The offer letter is the first, briefer document.
Acceptance & notice period
Acceptance is the candidate signing and returning the letter, which forms the contract. The notice period (e.g. 30 days after confirmation) is how much advance notice either party must give to end employment — shorter during probation.
Questions people ask
Short answers on Offer Letter Generator. Tap a question to open it.
01What should an offer letter contain?
Designation and reporting line, date of joining, location, the compensation structure with fixed and variable components, probation period, notice period, and the conditions the offer depends on — background verification, document submission and the acceptance deadline.
02Is an offer letter legally binding?
It is a contractual offer, and once accepted in writing a binding contract exists. Employers guard against this by making the offer conditional on verification and by reserving the right to withdraw before joining, but arbitrary withdrawal after acceptance has been challenged successfully.
03Should the offer show CTC or gross salary?
Show both. A CTC figure that includes employer PF, gratuity provision and variable pay overstates what the candidate will actually receive, and a mismatch discovered on the first payslip is a common cause of early attrition.
04Can an employer withdraw an offer?
Before acceptance, freely. After acceptance, only in line with the conditions stated in the letter — for example a failed background check. A withdrawal without a stated ground can expose the employer to a claim.
05What follows the offer letter?
The appointment letter on the date of joining, which carries the full terms of employment. The offer letter is a summary; the appointment letter is the contract.
