Disclaimer: Rent receipts are proof of rent paid; HRA exemption also depends on your salary structure and actual rent. Generated receipts are for your records — keep a rent agreement and payment trail as supporting evidence.

Key terms explained

HRA exemption — Sec 10(13A)

House Rent Allowance is exempt to the least of: actual HRA received, rent paid minus 10% of salary, or 50% of salary (metro) / 40% (non-metro). Rent receipts are the evidence for the "rent paid" leg of this test.

Landlord PAN over ₹1 lakh

If your annual rent exceeds ₹1,00,000, you must report your landlord's PAN to your employer / in your return. No PAN? A signed self-declaration (Form 60) from the landlord is required instead.

Revenue stamp

A ₹1 revenue stamp should be affixed on a rent receipt when rent is paid in cash above ₹5,000. Rent paid by bank transfer or cheque generally does not need a revenue stamp.

Rent agreement

Receipts work best backed by a rent / lease agreement and a payment trail (bank transfer). For high rents or scrutiny, an agreement plus banking evidence strengthens your HRA claim considerably.

Questions people ask

Short answers on Rent Receipt Generator. Tap a question to open it.

01When are rent receipts required?

When claiming the HRA exemption through your employer. Employers usually ask for receipts covering the months claimed, and for the rent agreement and landlord's PAN where the annual rent exceeds ₹1 lakh.

02Do rent receipts need a revenue stamp?

A receipt for a cash payment above ₹5,000 requires a one-rupee revenue stamp under the Indian Stamp Act. Receipts for rent paid by bank transfer are commonly issued without one, and the bank record is the stronger evidence anyway.

03Can I claim HRA for rent paid to a parent?

Yes, provided the arrangement is genuine — the parent must actually own the property, the rent must actually be paid, preferably by bank transfer, and the parent must declare that rent as income in their return.

04What if I do not receive HRA from my employer?

Then HRA is not available, but section 80GG allows a deduction for rent paid, limited to the least of ₹5,000 a month, 25% of total income, or rent paid minus 10% of total income — subject to conditions and only under the old regime.

05Is HRA available under the new regime?

No. The HRA exemption is one of the exemptions withdrawn under the new regime, so rent receipts have no tax value if you are taxed under it.

06What details must a rent receipt contain for income tax purposes?

A valid rent receipt must include: date of receipt, amount paid (in figures and words), rental period covered, complete address of the rented property, name and signature of the landlord, and landlord's PAN if annual rent exceeds Rs 1,00,000. The receipt should ideally be on the landlord's letterhead or stamped paper.

07Can I get HRA exemption for rent paid via bank transfer without paper receipts?

Yes. Bank transfer records serve as proof of rent payment. However, the income tax department or employer may still require a formal rent receipt and rent agreement as supporting documentation. A rent receipt generated based on bank transfer records and signed by the landlord is acceptable.
