PAN Correction / Update —
Fixing a Wrong Name, DOB or Address

A single wrong letter on a PAN can stop Aadhaar linking, break e-verification of your return and freeze a refund. This guide covers what can be corrected, the proof each change needs, the fee and timeline, and how to avoid ending up with a second PAN.

Quick Answer

PAN details are corrected through the "Request for New PAN Card or/and Changes or Correction in PAN Data" form, filed online on the Protean (NSDL) or UTIITSL portal. You can change name, date of birth, father's name, photograph, signature, address, gender and contact details. The PAN number itself never changes — only the data attached to it. The fee is about Rs 107 for an Indian communication address, and the updated card usually arrives in about 15 days.

Correct the PAN before you try to link Aadhaar

PAN-Aadhaar linking is matched on name, date of birth and gender. If even one differs — an expanded middle name, a swapped day and month, a maiden name — the link fails silently and the PAN eventually goes inoperative. Once inoperative, TDS is deducted at the higher Section 206AA rate and refunds stop. Fix the mismatch on whichever record is actually wrong, then link.

What Can Be Corrected on a PAN

FieldCan it change?Typical reason
NameYesMarriage, spelling error, initials expanded
Date of birthYesDay/month swapped, wrong year from the original form
Father's nameYesSpelling, or switching to mother's name where permitted
Photograph & signatureYesPoor original scan, outdated photo
Address & contactYesRelocation, new email or mobile
GenderYesData-entry error at the time of allotment

The same form is used to request a reprint of a lost or damaged card without changing any data — tick no correction boxes.

Step by step

How to File a PAN Correction

Open Protean or UTIITSLChoose "Changes or Correction in PAN data"
Enter the existing PANDetails load from the department record
Tick only the fields you are changingAn unticked field stays as it is
Pay ~Rs 107Card, net banking or UPI
Complete e-KYC or post the proofsAadhaar OTP where available

Tick the box next to only the fields you actually want changed. A common and expensive mistake is ticking every box, which forces the department to re-verify data that was already correct and delays the whole request.

Aadhaar e-KYC avoids the courier step

Where your Aadhaar has a linked mobile number, the correction can be completed with a paperless Aadhaar e-KYC — the photo and signature are pulled from the Aadhaar record and nothing needs to be posted. Otherwise the signed acknowledgement plus proofs must be couriered to the processing centre, which adds several days.

Proof required per change

Change requestedAcceptable proof
Name (marriage)Marriage certificate, or a gazette notification, plus Aadhaar showing the new name
Name (spelling)Aadhaar, passport or any government ID carrying the correct spelling
Date of birthBirth certificate, matriculation certificate, passport or Aadhaar
Father's nameFather's Aadhaar or passport, or the applicant's matriculation certificate
AddressAadhaar, passport, utility bill or bank statement not older than three months
Company / LLP nameFresh Certificate of Incorporation issued by the ROC after the name change

Proofs must be in the name being applied for, not the name being replaced. A marriage certificate alone is often rejected without a supporting ID that already shows the new name.

Common Problems and How to Clear Them

  • Aadhaar link keeps failing — the name or DOB differs. Decide which record is correct and change the other one; do not change both at once.
  • Return will not e-verify — the date of birth on the PAN does not match what the portal holds. A DOB correction usually clears it.
  • Refund failed — the name on the PAN does not match the bank account holder name, so pre-validation of the account fails.
  • A second PAN turned up — surrender the newer one with the same correction form and keep the older number, which already carries your Form 26AS history.
  • Correction rejected without explanation — nine times out of ten the proof did not carry the new name, or the signature fell outside the box on the acknowledgement.
Never apply for a fresh PAN to fix a wrong one

When a correction is refused, the tempting shortcut is to apply for a new PAN with the right details. That creates a duplicate PAN, which is an offence under Section 139A carrying a Rs 10,000 penalty under Section 272B — and it splits your TDS credits across two numbers. Always re-file the correction on the existing PAN instead.

PAN Correction / Update — Frequently Asked Questions

Basics
Does my PAN number change after a correction?
No. A PAN is permanent. A correction changes only the data attached to it — name, date of birth, address, photograph and so on. You keep the same ten-character number, and the updated card is reissued against it. This is precisely why you should never apply for a fresh PAN to fix an error on an existing one.
What does a PAN correction cost?
About Rs 107 including GST where the card is to be delivered to an Indian address. If the communication address is outside India the fee rises to roughly Rs 1,017 to cover dispatch. The same fee applies whether you are changing one field or several, so it is worth correcting everything that is wrong in a single request.
How long does a PAN correction take?
Usually about 15 days from submission for the updated e-PAN, with the physical card following shortly after. Requests completed through Aadhaar e-KYC move faster because nothing has to be couriered. You can track progress with the 15-digit acknowledgement number on the portal where you filed.
Name
How do I change the name on my PAN after marriage?
File the change/correction form ticking the name field and submit a marriage certificate or gazette notification. In practice the department also wants a government ID that already carries the new name — usually an updated Aadhaar or passport. Update the Aadhaar first, then the PAN, so the two records agree and Aadhaar linking continues to work.
My PAN name has my initials but Aadhaar has the full name. Which do I change?
Change whichever record is inconsistent with your other documents. Since Aadhaar is now the reference point for most KYC and for PAN linking, most people expand the name on the PAN to match the Aadhaar. Do not edit both records at the same time — change one, wait for it to be reflected, and then attempt the link.
Aadhaar
Why does my PAN-Aadhaar link keep failing?
Linking is matched on name, date of birth and gender. Any difference — an expanded middle name, a swapped day and month in the date of birth, a maiden name still sitting on one record — causes a silent failure. Compare the two records field by field, correct the one that is actually wrong, and retry once the change is reflected.
What happens if my PAN goes inoperative?
An inoperative PAN is treated much as if you had none. TDS on your income is deducted at the higher rate under Section 206AA, refunds are held back, and returns will not process normally. The PAN is not cancelled — it becomes operative again once the Aadhaar link is completed successfully.
Problems
My PAN correction was rejected. What now?
The two usual causes are proof that does not carry the new details, and a signature that strays outside the box on the acknowledgement form. Read the rejection reason on the portal, replace the offending document or re-sign the acknowledgement, and re-file against the same PAN. Never respond to a rejection by applying for a new PAN.
I have two PANs. How do I surrender one?
Use the same change/correction form, entering the PAN you intend to keep and listing the duplicate in the section for surrendering additional PANs. Keep the older number, because it already carries your Form 26AS credits and bank KYC. Holding more than one PAN attracts a Rs 10,000 penalty under Section 272B, so deal with it rather than leaving it.
Entities
How does a company change the name on its PAN?
A company files the correction form with the fresh Certificate of Incorporation issued by the ROC after the name change, signed by a director. The PAN number stays the same. Do this promptly, because invoices, TDS certificates and bank records issued in the new name will otherwise not reconcile against a PAN still held in the old one.
