Schedule I explained: this guide covers what it means, who it applies to, the step-by-step process, documents required, fees, due dates and penalties in India — so you can stay compliant with confidence and avoid costly mistakes.
Schedule I is short but it governs two marks that appear on many packs: the "fortified with" words with the fortified-food logo, and the logo for certified organic food. Regulation 5(7)(e) is the link: fortified and organic food shall be marked with the logo specified in Schedule I, and FSSAI may specify a logo for any other food from time to time.
The text is read as amended up to 24 March 2026 (FSSAI Compendium Version VIII dated 09.09.2025; the First Amendment Regulations, 2026 apply from 1 July 2027 and substitute paragraph (1) of the Schedule). FSSAI compendia are reference consolidations and the Gazette text prevails. Later notifications should be checked on fssai.gov.in. Brands with fortified or organic ranges can have their logo use checked through our FSSAI label compliance service.
Every package of fortified food carries the words "fortified with ... (name of the fortificant)" and the logo, and may carry the tag line "Sampoorna Poshan Swasth Jeevan" under the logo. Every package of certified organic food under the Organic Foods Regulations, 2017 carries the organic logo. The logos are graphics; this article describes the words printed around them. A 1 July 2027 amendment substitutes paragraph (1).
The link in regulation 5(7)(e)
Regulation 5(7)(e) says that fortified food and organic food shall be marked with the logo specified in Schedule I, and that FSSAI may specify a logo for any other food as decided from time to time. The Schedule is headed "(See regulation 5(7)(e))". The other label particulars around the logos, such as the FSSAI logo and licence number, are in regulation 5(6) to (9).
Schedule I, paragraph (1): fortified food
The text reads: every package of fortified food shall carry the words "fortified with ………… (name of the fortificant)" and the logo, as specified below, on the label. It may also carry a tag line "Sampoorna Poshan Swasth Jeevan" under the logo.
The compendium shows the logo as a graphic with the printed words "Fortified with...." and the tag line "SAMPOORNA POSHAN SWASTHA JEEVAN" beneath it. The text does not describe the shape, colour or size of the logo in words, so artwork has to be taken from the logo itself.
Fortification is regulated by the Fortification of Foods Regulations, 2018. Regulation 7(2) of those Regulations repeats the words and logo requirement for every package of fortified food, with a proviso that it is not required for iodised salt when fortified with iodine, and regulation 7(4) adds a statement for iron-fortified food. Our article on regulations 5 to 8 of the Fortification Regulations explains those provisions. The fortification regulation refers to the logo as being in its own Schedule-II, while the Labelling and Display Regulations place it in their Schedule I; the two references are read as printed.
Schedule I, paragraph (2): organic food
Every package of certified organic food as per the Food Safety and Standards (Organic Foods) Regulations, 2017 shall carry the logo as specified below (a graphic in the compendium, with no words of its own in the text). The Organic Foods Regulations deal with the label itself: regulation 5(1) says labelling on the package of organic food shall convey full and accurate information on the organic status of the product, and that it may carry a certification or quality assurance mark of one of the systems named in regulation 4 in addition to the organic logo of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. Regulation 5(3) lets in-conversion products be labelled as set out there and says they shall not carry the logo. See our article on regulations 5 to 8 of the Organic Foods Regulations.

Notified change, in force from 1 July 2027
The First Amendment Regulations, 2026 (24 March 2026) substitute paragraph (1) of Schedule I from 1 July 2027 with: "(1) Every package of food fortified as per Food Safety and Standards (Fortification of Foods) Regulations, 2018, shall carry the words 'fortified with ………… (name of the fortificant)' and the logo, as specified below, on the label and may also carry a tag line 'Sampoorna Poshan Swasth Jeevan' under the logo."
The substituted paragraph names the Fortification of Foods Regulations, 2018 and is followed by a new logo graphic. Until 1 July 2027 the paragraph described above applies.
A related change takes effect on the same date: the new regulation 8(1B) says logos notified under the Food Safety and Standards Regulations may not be given on packages of not more than 100 square centimetres, with the information on multi-unit packages; see regulations 7 and 8.
An invented example
Sun Grain Foods sells fortified wheat flour and a separate line of certified organic lentils. The flour pack carries "fortified with iron, folic acid and vitamin B12" in the words the Schedule prescribes, the logo and, if the company wishes, the tag line below the logo. The lentil pack carries the organic logo alongside the certification mark of the system it was certified under. A 50 gram sample sachet of the flour under 100 square centimetres may, from 1 July 2027, leave off the notified logo while the multi-unit carton shows it.
