Disclaimer: Conversion is provided for convenience in drafting invoices, cheques and agreements. Always re-read the words against the figures before signing — in Indian banking practice, if the words and figures on a cheque disagree, the amount in words generally prevails.

The Indian numbering system

India groups digits differently from the West. After the first three digits, the grouping switches to pairs — which is why ₹12,50,000 has commas in places that surprise anyone used to 1,250,000. The place names run thousand → lakh → crore, and each new name arrives every two digits rather than every three.

Place values compared
Indian nameFigureInternational
One thousand1,000One thousand
One lakh1,00,000Hundred thousand
Ten lakh10,00,000One million
One crore1,00,00,000Ten million
Ten crore10,00,00,000Hundred million
Hundred crore1,00,00,00,000One billion
One lakh crore1,00,00,00,00,000One trillion
Budget documents and RBI releases use crore; listed-company filings and foreign investors usually use million. Both formats are produced above so you can paste whichever the reader expects.

Worked example

Take ₹1,25,000.50 — one lakh twenty-five thousand rupees and fifty paise. Here is how it breaks into place values and becomes cheque wording.

₹1,25,000.50
Lakh place1 → One Lakh
Thousand place25 → Twenty Five Thousand
Hundreds / tens / units000 → nil
Decimal part50 → Fifty Paise

Where words are required

Cheques

Every cheque carries the amount twice — figures and words. Under the Negotiable Instruments Act practice, if the two disagree the words govern, so an error there is expensive.

Tax invoices

Rule 46 of the CGST Rules does not force words, but most accounting software and buyers expect “Total Invoice Value (in words)” as an anti-tampering control on the invoice.

Agreements & deeds

Sale deeds, rent agreements and loan documents state consideration in figures and words so the stamp duty base cannot be altered after execution.

Board resolutions

Resolutions authorising borrowing or investment limits under Sections 179/180 spell the ceiling in words, because the filed copy is what the bank and ROC rely on.

Questions people ask

Short answers on Rupees in Words Converter. Tap a question to open it.

01How do I write an amount in words on a cheque?

Write the rupees in words, then the paise if any, and close with the word "only" so nothing can be added after it — for example "Rupees Two Lakh Fifty Thousand and Fifty Paise Only". Banks in India follow the Indian numbering system on cheques.

02What is the Indian numbering system?

After thousand it groups in lakh (1,00,000) and crore (1,00,00,000) rather than million and billion. Written with Indian digit grouping, ₹12,34,567 is Twelve Lakh Thirty Four Thousand Five Hundred Sixty Seven.

03Is the amount in words legally required on invoices?

A tax invoice under the GST rules must carry the taxable value and tax amount, and while words are not mandatory, most businesses print them because in a dispute the amount in words prevails over the figures under s.18 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881 for negotiable instruments.

04How are paise written in words?

Paise are written after the rupees as a separate figure — "Rupees One Thousand and Fifty Paise Only". They are never written as a fraction or a decimal in the words portion.
