Turning 60? Senior-citizen tax benefits change
Higher basic exemption, Section 80TTB and full 15H eligibility — get your return reviewed by a CA.
Disclaimer: This calculator uses the Gregorian calendar and counts completed years, months and days. Individual schemes, exams and insurers may define age differently (for example “age nearer birthday”). Always confirm against the specific rule that applies to you.
How age is actually counted
Age is counted in completed units, never rounded. If you were born on 15 August 2000 and today is 10 August 2026, you are 25 years, 11 months and 26 days old — not 26 — because your 26th birthday has not arrived yet. This calculator borrows days from the previous calendar month (which is why the day count varies between 28 and 31) and correctly handles leap years, so 29 February birthdays are treated as 28 February in non-leap years.
Ages that change your tax
Under Indian income tax law, age is measured at any time during the financial year — so if you turn 60 on 31 March, you are a senior citizen for that entire year. These are the thresholds that matter.
| Age | What changes |
|---|---|
| 18 years | PAN in own name, can be a company director, contracts valid |
| 21 years | Minimum age to be appointed a designated partner / hold certain licences |
| 60 years | Senior citizen — old-regime exemption rises to ₹3,00,000; Section 80TTB ₹50,000 on interest; Form 15H available |
| 75 years | Section 194P — pension + interest earners can be exempt from filing ITR |
| 80 years | Super senior — old-regime exemption rises to ₹5,00,000 |
Worked example
Date of birth 15 August 2000, age calculated on 10 August 2026. Here is exactly how the years, months and days fall out.
Key terms explained
Completed age
Your age at your last birthday. This is what almost every Indian form, exam and tax rule means when it asks for age. A person who is 25y 11m is 25, not 26.
Age as on a cut-off date
Recruitment and exam notifications fix a date — commonly 1 January or 1 July — and measure everyone's age on that day, regardless of when you apply.
Age nearer birthday
Life insurers often round to the nearest birthday, so 25y 8m is treated as 26 for premium purposes. This raises your premium band and is not the same as completed age.
“At any time during the year”
The income tax senior-citizen test. Turning 60 on 31 March 2026 makes you a senior citizen for the whole of FY 2025-26 — a full year of higher exemption.
How the Age Calculator works
4 steps, start to finish — the same order the tool follows.
- 01Enter your date of birth.
- 02Set the "as on" date — today by default, or any date you need the age on.
- 03Read your exact age in years, months and days.
- 04Check the total days lived and the countdown to your next birthday.
Questions people ask
Short answers on Age Calculator. Tap a question to open it.
01How is age calculated in years, months and days?
Whole years are counted first, then whole calendar months, and the leftover days last. Because months differ in length, the day count is taken from the previous month before the "as on" date — so the result is exact rather than an approximation based on 30-day months.
02What age proof does the Income-tax Act use for senior citizens?
A resident who is 60 years or more at any time during the financial year is a senior citizen, and 80 years or more is a super senior citizen. The status applies for the whole year even if the birthday falls on the last day, so check your age as on 31 March.
03How do I calculate age as on a past or future date?
Change the "as on" date. This is what you need for eligibility cut-offs — government job age limits, school admission, insurance entry age or a pension scheme — which are almost always tested on a specific reference date, not on today.
04Does the calculator account for leap years?
Yes. It works on actual calendar dates, so 29 February and the varying lengths of months are handled correctly in both the age and the total-days figure.
