Key terms explained
Udyam Registration
The single, free, online MSME registration. It replaces Udyog Aadhaar and is the prerequisite for CGTMSE, PMEGP, Samadhaan, procurement preference and most other benefits.
CGTMSE credit guarantee
A trust that guarantees the bank against default, so MSMEs get collateral-free loans up to ₹10 crore. The borrower pays a small guarantee fee; no property or third-party security is needed.
The 45-day rule (Samadhaan)
Under the MSMED Act, a buyer must pay a registered MSME within 45 days. If not, the buyer owes compound interest at three times the RBI bank rate — enforceable via the MSME Samadhaan portal.
Public Procurement Policy
Central ministries and PSUs must source 25% of their annual purchases from MSMEs, with sub-quotas of 4% for SC/ST and 3% for women-owned enterprises — a huge reserved market via GeM.
Questions people ask
Short answers on MSME Benefits & Scheme Finder. Tap a question to open it.
01What benefits does an Udyam registration give?
Priority sector lending and collateral-free credit under CGTMSE, protection under the 45-day payment rule, preference in government procurement, subsidised patent and trademark fees, interest subvention schemes, and access to state incentives on power tariff, stamp duty and capital subsidy.
02Is Udyam registration free?
Yes. Registration on the Udyam portal is free and is done with Aadhaar and PAN, with turnover and investment data pulled automatically from the GST and income-tax systems. Any site charging a fee for it is not the official portal.
03What is CGTMSE?
A guarantee scheme under which lenders can extend credit to micro and small enterprises without collateral or third-party guarantee, up to the scheme limit, with the trust guaranteeing a portion of the default.
04Are traders eligible for MSME schemes?
Retail and wholesale traders can obtain Udyam registration and are eligible for priority sector lending, but they remain outside several manufacturing- and service-specific subsidy schemes.
05Does an MSME get preference in government tenders?
Yes. The public procurement policy reserves a share of purchases for micro and small enterprises, exempts them from earnest money deposit in many cases, and allows relaxation of prior turnover and experience conditions.
