Documents required by taxpayer type
Everyone needs the common identity, bank and tax-statement documents. On top of that, the papers you gather depend on where your income comes from. Use the pill above to reveal your section, then tick items off as you collect them.

How to use this checklist
Filing goes smoothly when your paperwork is ready before you log in to the e-filing portal. Follow these four steps.
Key terms explained
Form 26AS vs AIS / TIS
Form 26AS is the tax-credit statement showing TDS, TCS and taxes paid against your PAN. The AIS (Annual Information Statement) is wider — it also captures interest, dividends, securities transactions and more, and the TIS summarises it. Reconcile all three before filing.
Form 16
The TDS certificate issued by your employer. Part A shows tax deducted and deposited; Part B gives the detailed salary breakup and deductions. It is the primary document for a salaried return.
Filing due dates
For most individuals the due date is 31 July of the assessment year. For taxpayers whose accounts require a tax audit (typically business/profession), the due date is 31 October.
E-verification
A return is not complete until verified. E-verify within 30 days of filing — via Aadhaar OTP, net banking or a bank/demat EVC — otherwise the return is treated as not filed.
Questions people ask
Short answers on ITR Filing Doc Checklist. Tap a question to open it.
01What documents do I need to file my ITR?
PAN and Aadhaar, Form 16 from every employer, Form 16A for other TDS, bank interest certificates, capital gains statements from your broker or fund house, and proof of the deductions you plan to claim. Download Form 26AS and the AIS before you start.
02What extra documents does a business or professional need?
Books of account or a summary, GST returns, the bank statements of business accounts, fixed asset and depreciation details, loan statements for interest claims, and the audit report if a tax audit applies.
03Do I need to attach documents to the return?
No. The income-tax return is annexure-less — nothing is uploaded. But you must retain the documents, because they are what you produce if the return is picked up for scrutiny or a query is raised.
04What should I check before filing?
That your AIS and 26AS match your records, that the bank account for the refund is pre-validated, that the right ITR form is used, and that the regime you are choosing is the one you actually want for the year.
05How long should I keep the documents?
At least six years from the end of the relevant assessment year, and longer where a foreign asset is involved, because reassessment can go back much further in those cases.
