DIN & DIR-3 KYC — the essentials
A Director Identification Number (DIN) is issued once and stays with you for life. To keep it active, every DIN holder must complete DIR-3 KYC by 30 June — even if you hold no directorship. Miss the deadline and the MCA marks your DIN "Deactivated due to non-filing of DIR-3 KYC", blocking you from signing filings until you pay a ₹5,000 late fee and re-file.
How to check your DIN status on the MCA portal
This tool tells you which form you need, but the authoritative status lives on the MCA portal. Check it directly: Enquire DIN Status on mca.gov.in.
Enter your DIN
Type your 8-digit DIN. The page returns the current status — Approved, or Deactivated due to non-filing of DIR-3 KYC.
Pick the right form
Never filed or details changed → DIR-3 KYC eForm. Filed before with no change → DIR-3 KYC WEB (OTP verification).
File & verify OTP
Login to MCA, complete the form or WEB service, verify the OTP sent to your registered email and mobile, and submit.
Key terms explained
DIN deactivation
If DIR-3 KYC is not filed by 30 June, the MCA flags your DIN as "Deactivated due to non-filing of DIR-3 KYC". A deactivated DIN cannot be used to sign or file any company/LLP form until it is reactivated.
₹5,000 late fee
To reactivate a deactivated DIN you must file DIR-3 KYC along with a ₹5,000 penalty fee. Filed on or before 30 June, the fee is nil — the entire cost of the penalty is missing the deadline.
DIR-3 KYC eForm
The full eForm, digitally signed and certified by a professional. Required the first time you do KYC for a DIN, or in any year your email or mobile number has changed since the last KYC.
DIR-3 KYC WEB (OTP)
A simple web-based verification. If you have already filed the full eForm once and nothing has changed, you just confirm your details via OTP each year using KYC-WEB — no eForm, no certification.
Questions people ask
Short answers on DIR-3 KYC Status Checker. Tap a question to open it.
01How often is DIR-3 KYC required now?
Once every three consecutive financial years. Rule 12A was amended by the Companies (Appointment and Qualification of Directors) Amendment Rules, 2025 with effect from 31 March 2026 — it is no longer an annual filing.
02What is the due date and which form is used?
The due date is 30 June of the year in which your three-year cycle falls due, and a single unified Form DIR-3 KYC Web is now used. A director who was compliant at the changeover is next due on 30 June 2028.
03What if my mobile number, email or address changes?
Any change must be updated within 30 days. That update does not reset your three-year cycle — your next regular KYC is still due in the same year as before.
04What happens if DIR-3 KYC is missed?
The DIN is deactivated and marked "Deactivated due to non-filing of DIR-3 KYC". It is reactivated only on filing with a late fee of ₹5,000 per DIN. A deactivated DIN cannot be used to sign any MCA filing.
05Do I need to file if I hold a DIN but am not a director anywhere?
Yes. KYC is tied to the DIN, not to any current directorship. Anyone allotted a DIN in an approved status must complete KYC in their due year, or surrender the DIN in Form DIR-5.
