Geographical Indication (GI) Government Fees in India

An application to register a geographical indication in Form GI-1 costs ₹1,000 for each class. Registration of an authorised user in Form GI-3 costs ₹10, and renewal of an authorised user also costs ₹10. Renewal of the registration of a geographical indication in Form GI-4 costs ₹500. These are the fees in the First Schedule as substituted by the Amendment Rules notified on 3 November 2025.

Late Fee and Penalty

Renewal missed

The Registrar may remove a GI or an authorised user when the registration expires. It is not removed if Form GI-4 with the fee and surcharge is filed within six months of expiry; after six months and within one year it can be restored only on application, at the Registrar’s discretion. GI Act s.18(4), 18(5) · rules 62, 63

No answer to objections

If the applicant does not amend the application, submit observations, ask for a hearing or attend it within two months of the Registrar’s objection, the application is dismissed. GI Rules 2002 · rule 34(2)

Showing a GI as registered when it is not

A penalty equal to one half per cent of total sales or turnover, or of gross receipts in a profession, as per the audited accounts, or ₹5 lakh, whichever is less. It is imposed by an adjudicating officer. GI Act s.42(2), 37A · Jan Vishwas Act 2023, in force 1 Aug 2024

Applying a false GI

Imprisonment of six months to three years and a fine of ₹50,000 to ₹2 lakh, unless the person proves he acted without intent to defraud. The court may go lower for adequate and special reasons. GI Act s.39

How to Apply and Pay

  1. 1File Form GI-1In triplicate with three copies of the Statement of Case (rule 23(1)), at the Registry office for the territory of the goods (section 11(4)).

How to Use This Chart

  • Count the classes. Entries 1C, 1D and 2A are charged for each class.
  • An authorised user pays ₹10 for registration and ₹10 for renewal. The lower amounts in entries 5A, 5C, 7A and 7F also apply to authorised user matters.
  • Restoration under entry 4B is ₹1,000 plus the renewal fee that applies.
  • The Schedule does not give separate amounts for physical filing and e-filing.

Any association of persons or producers, or any organisation or authority established by or under any law that represents the interest of the producers of the goods (section 11(1)). A single producer joins as an authorised user once the GI is registered (section 17).

Ten years, renewable for ten years at a time (section 18(1) and (3)). An authorised user is registered for ten years or until the GI registration expires, whichever is earlier (section 18(2)).

Form GI-4 (or Form GI-3 for an authorised user) may be filed at any time not more than six months before the last registration expires (rule 60(1)). If it has not been filed, the Registrar sends a notice between one and three months before expiry (rule 61).

Within six months after expiry, the GI is not removed if Form GI-4 is filed with the fee and surcharge (section 18(4) proviso); entry 4C fixes ₹1,000. After six months and within one year, restoration can be asked for under section 18(5) for ₹1,000 plus the renewal fee (entry 4B, rule 63).
