Trade licence

A municipal licence to carry on a particular trade at a particular premises. Eating houses, shops and many workshops need one from the local body — in some cities it is called a health trade licence.

How Trade licence works

The usual picture. Procedures, fees and forms differ by state and authority — always check the current rules before you apply.

Who needs it

Restaurants, cafés, bakeries and other eating houses
Shops, salons, gyms and other trades listed by the municipality
Workshops and small units that store or process goods on the premises

Documents usually asked for

Proof of the premises — ownership deed or rent agreement with the owner's NOC
Identity and address proof of the owner or partners
Recent property-tax receipt
Site plan or layout of the premises
Fire NOC or other NOCs where the municipality asks for them

The process

Check your trade's category and the fee in the municipality's schedule
Apply on the municipal portal, or at the ward office
Inspection of the premises by the health or licensing inspector
Licence issued; renew it each year (or for the period the city allows)
