How the readiness score works

Filing your ITR goes wrong when a document is missing or a figure doesn't match what the department already has. This checker breaks readiness into three stages — gather, reconcile, set up — so you can see at a glance how prepared you are and what to do next.

01

Gather documents

Download Form 16, Form 26AS and the AIS/TIS, plus interest certificates, capital-gains statements and any deduction proofs. These are the raw numbers that go into your return.

02

Reconcile

Match the TDS in your Form 26AS with your salary slips, and verify every entry in the AIS. Mismatches are the number-one cause of tax notices.

03

Set up & file

Link PAN–Aadhaar, pre-validate your bank for the refund, pick your regime — then file and e-verify within 30 days to complete the process.

Dates & limits you must know

Filing on time and e-verifying quickly keeps your return valid and your refund moving. These are the deadlines that matter for FY 2026-27 (AY 2027-28).

31 Jul
Due date to file ITR for individuals not requiring audit
31 Oct
Due date for taxpayers whose accounts require audit
30 days
Window to e-verify after filing — else the return is invalid
15 Jun
Form 16 issued by employers; AIS/26AS updated through the year

Key terms explained

Form 26AS vs AIS

Form 26AS is your tax-credit statement — the TDS/TCS deposited against your PAN. The AIS (Annual Information Statement) is broader: it lists interest, dividends, share and mutual-fund transactions, and more. Reconcile both against your own records before filing.

Due dates — 31 Jul & 31 Oct

Most individuals file by 31 July. If your accounts need a tax audit, the date is 31 October. Missing it means a belated return with a late fee under Section 234F and possible interest on tax due.

E-verify within 30 days

A filed return is not complete until it's verified. You must e-verify within 30 days of filing — via Aadhaar OTP, net-banking or EVC. Miss the window and the return is treated as never filed.

Pre-validate your bank

Refunds are paid only to a pre-validated bank account linked to your PAN. Validate it on the e-filing portal in advance and set it as the nominated account so your refund isn't held up.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should be ready before I file my return?

Your income figures from every source, Form 16 and 16A, the AIS and 26AS reconciled with your books, proof of deductions, capital gains statements, a pre-validated bank account, and a decision on the tax regime.

Which ITR form should I use?

ITR-1 for a resident with salary, one house property and modest other income; ITR-2 where there are capital gains or foreign assets; ITR-3 for business or professional income; and ITR-4 for presumptive income under 44AD, 44ADA or 44AE. Using the wrong form makes the return defective.

What is the last date to file?

31 July for individuals not subject to audit, and 31 October where a tax audit applies. A belated or revised return can be filed until 31 December of the assessment year, and an updated return under section 139(8A) for longer, with additional tax.

What is the penalty for filing late?

A late fee under section 234F of ₹5,000, reduced to ₹1,000 where total income does not exceed ₹5 lakh, plus interest under section 234A. A belated return also forfeits the right to carry forward most losses.

Is e-verification necessary?

Yes. A return that is not verified within 30 days of filing is treated as never filed. Verify through Aadhaar OTP, net banking, a bank ATM or a demat account, or by sending a signed ITR-V to CPC Bengaluru.
