Jurisdiction details
Not sure of your ward, circle or range?
Our GST team confirms your exact Centre/State jurisdiction and handles registration or amendments.
Disclaimer: This tool orients you using the GSTIN state code and public references — it does not fetch your live ward / circle / range. Your exact jurisdiction is authoritative only on the CBIC "Know Your Jurisdiction" portal, your state commercial-tax portal, or your GST REG-06 certificate.
How to find your exact GST jurisdiction
GST jurisdiction has two layers: which authority handles you (Centre or State) and which office within it (Zone → Commissionerate → Division → Range, or State Ward / Circle). The GSTIN only reveals the state — the exact office comes from an official source. Here is the reliable way to get it.
Use the CBIC "Know Your Jurisdiction" portal
Go to cbic-gst.gov.in → Know Your Jurisdiction and drill down State → Zone → Commissionerate → Division → Range. This is the source of truth for Central jurisdiction (CGST).
Check your GST registration certificate (REG-06)
Log in to gst.gov.in → Services → User Services → View/Download Certificates. Form GST REG-06 prints both your Centre and State jurisdiction — Ward, Circle, Range, Division and Commissionerate — right on the certificate.
Use "Search Taxpayer" on the GST portal
On gst.gov.in → Search Taxpayer → Search by GSTIN/UIN, enter any valid GSTIN. The result shows the Centre Jurisdiction and State Jurisdiction fields publicly — no login needed.
Visit your State commercial-tax portal
For the State ward / circle, each state runs its own "Know Your Jurisdiction" / ward-finder (e.g. Maharashtra mahagst.gov.in, Karnataka gst.kar.nic.in). Enter your PIN code or locality to get the exact SGST ward.
Decode the state from your GSTIN
If you only need the state, the first two digits of the GSTIN are enough — paste your GSTIN in the tool above and we map the code to the state instantly (e.g. 27 = Maharashtra, 29 = Karnataka).
Anatomy of a GSTIN
A GSTIN is a 15-character number that encodes where and to whom the registration belongs. The state jurisdiction lives in the very first block.
GST state code reference
Every state and union territory has a fixed 2-digit GST state code (identical to the census state codes). These are the first two digits of every GSTIN issued in that jurisdiction.

How jurisdiction works
When you register for GST, you are assigned to one administering authority — either the Central tax office or the State tax office — even though you pay both CGST and SGST. The allocation is automatic and follows a simple national rule.
Turnover decides the split ratio
Taxpayers with turnover up to ₹1.5 crore are divided 90% to the State and 10% to the Centre. Above ₹1.5 crore, the split is 50:50 between Centre and State.
A computer allocates you at random
Within each bucket, taxpayers are assigned to Centre or State by a stratified random draw. Once allocated, that authority handles your assessments, audits and refunds.
Both authorities still appear on REG-06
Your certificate always lists a Centre jurisdiction (Zone / Commissionerate / Division / Range) and a State jurisdiction (Ward / Circle), but only your allocated one is your administering office.
Key terms explained
Centre vs State jurisdiction
Every registrant is administered by either the Central GST office or the State GST office. Both are printed on your certificate, but assessments, notices and audits come only from the one you were allocated to.
Ward, Circle & Range
These are the smallest jurisdiction units. Ward / Circle are the State-side office names; Range (under a Division and Commissionerate) is the Centre-side unit. Your PIN code usually maps to a specific ward.
GSTIN state code
The first two digits of a GSTIN. It is a fixed number per state (e.g. 27 Maharashtra, 29 Karnataka, 07 Delhi) and is the only jurisdiction detail you can read directly off the number.
90:10 taxpayer allocation
The rule that divides registrants between Centre and State. Below ₹1.5 Cr turnover it is 90% State / 10% Centre; above ₹1.5 Cr it is 50:50. This is why smaller businesses are usually under State jurisdiction.
Questions people ask
Short answers on GST Jurisdiction Finder. Tap a question to open it.
01Why do I need to know my GST jurisdiction?
Every registration is allotted to a specific state or central range, division and commissionerate. That office issues notices, processes refunds and handles assessments, so you need it for correspondence and for filling the registration application correctly.
02How do I find my jurisdiction?
From the state and the ward or circle mapped to your principal place of business. The state commercial-tax website publishes the ward map by pin code or locality, and the CBIC portal publishes the central jurisdiction by address.
03What is the difference between state and central jurisdiction?
Every taxpayer is administratively assigned to either the state or the central authority under the cross-empowerment arrangement, in an approximate 90:10 split for smaller taxpayers. Your assigned authority is shown on your registration certificate.
04What can I read from a GSTIN?
The first two digits are the state code, the next ten are the PAN, the thirteenth is the entity number for that PAN in that state, the fourteenth is "Z" by default, and the last is a checksum character.
05What if my jurisdiction is shown wrongly?
File a non-core amendment of registration to correct the address details, or raise a grievance on the portal. An incorrect jurisdiction can cause notices to be issued by the wrong office and refunds to stall.
