Quick Answer

Pay income tax through Challan 280 (now the e-Pay Tax service on incometax.gov.in). Choose the tax type: 100 for Advance Tax, 300 for Self-Assessment Tax (paid when you file your ITR), or 400 for tax on a demand notice. Select the correct assessment year — AY 2026-27 for income earned in FY 2025-26 — pay by net banking, UPI, debit card or NEFT/RTGS, and download the challan receipt showing the BSR code and serial number. The payment reflects in Form 26AS / AIS within 3-5 working days.

At a glance

Challan 280 Payment Type Codes

On the e-Pay Tax screen you pick a "Type of Payment (minor head)". Choosing the wrong code is the most common Challan 280 mistake — here is when to use each.

CodePayment TypeWhen to UseTiming
100Advance TaxWhen estimated tax for the year exceeds ₹10,000 after TDSIn-year: 15 Jun, 15 Sep, 15 Dec, 15 Mar
300Self-Assessment TaxBalance tax due while filing your ITRAfter year-end, before filing ITR
400Tax on Regular AssessmentTax demanded by the department after assessmentOn receipt of a demand notice u/s 156
102SurtaxRarely applicable to individualsAs applicable
106Dividend Distribution TaxLegacy — DDT abolished; dividends now taxed in shareholder handsHistorical

Challan 280 is the legacy ITNS-280 challan; since the TIN-to-portal migration it is the "Income Tax (other than companies)" flow under e-Pay Tax at incometax.gov.in. Verify the current screen on the portal before paying.

Pick the right minor head and AY

Self-Assessment tax paid under the "Advance Tax (100)" head, or under the wrong assessment year, will not auto-set-off in your ITR and can trigger a mismatch or demand. Confirm both the type code and the AY on the confirmation screen before you pay.

Which Assessment Year to Select

The assessment year (AY) is always one year after the financial year (FY) in which you earned the income. Selecting the wrong AY is the single biggest reason Challan 280 payments do not match your ITR.

Income earned inFinancial YearSelect Assessment Year
Apr 2024 - Mar 2025FY 2024-25AY 2025-26
Apr 2025 - Mar 2026FY 2025-26AY 2026-27
Apr 2026 - Mar 2027FY 2026-27AY 2027-28

Advance tax on current-year income uses the same AY as that year (e.g. advance tax on FY 2025-26 income → AY 2026-27).

Know the difference

Advance Tax vs Self-Assessment Tax

100

Advance Tax — pay as you earn

  • Due when total tax after TDS exceeds ₹10,000 in a year
  • Paid in instalments: 15% by 15 Jun, 45% by 15 Sep, 75% by 15 Dec, 100% by 15 Mar
  • Interest u/s 234B / 234C applies if you under-pay or miss instalments
  • Presumptive (44AD/44ADA) taxpayers pay 100% by 15 March
300

Self-Assessment Tax — before filing

  • Balance tax after TDS and advance tax, paid while filing the ITR
  • Includes any interest u/s 234A/234B/234C due
  • Return cannot be validly filed until it is paid
  • Reflects in 26AS/AIS and is claimed in the ITR
TaxClue Insight

The new tax regime is the default from AY 2026-27. Under it, a resident individual with taxable income up to ₹12,00,000 pays nil tax after the Section 87A rebate (about ₹12.75L for a salaried person after the ₹75,000 standard deduction). If your income is within that band and fully covered by TDS, you may have no self-assessment tax to pay at all — check before you create a challan.

If something goes wrong

Fixing a Wrong Challan 280 Payment

Errors in the assessment year, minor head (100/300/400) or PAN can be corrected — the route depends on how much time has passed.

ErrorHow to fixWindow
Wrong AY, minor head or amountBank can modify/cancel before it uploads to the systemSame day, same bank
Wrong AY / minor head (online)Use "Challan Correction" under Services on incometax.gov.inWithin the portal-allowed window
Error found after ITR filedFile a rectification request u/s 154 with the Assessing OfficerAfter processing
Payment not in 26AS after 10 daysCheck challan status on the portal / protean (TIN) with BSR + serialAfter 10 days

Always download and verify the challan receipt immediately after paying, so the BSR code, serial number and date are on record.

Challan 280 payments typically show in Form 26AS and the AIS within 3-5 working days; NEFT/RTGS can take 7-10 days. Net banking, UPI and debit-card payments are usually the fastest.

Don't double-pay on a mismatch

If a valid payment simply has not reflected yet, do not pay again — check the challan status first. If it was genuinely paid under the wrong AY or head, correct that challan rather than making a second payment, to avoid a refund-recovery cycle.

Questions, answered

Short, direct answers to the 16 questions readers ask most on this topic.

Go to incometax.gov.in and click e-Pay Tax (log in with PAN and password, or use the pre-login PAN + mobile OTP option). Select "Income Tax", then choose the payment type — Advance Tax (100), Self-Assessment Tax (300) or Demand (400) — and the correct assessment year. Enter the amount in the Tax field, pay via net banking, UPI, debit card or NEFT/RTGS, and download the challan receipt with the BSR code and serial number. It reflects in Form 26AS in about 3-5 working days.

Yes. Challan 280 is the legacy name (form ITNS-280) for paying income tax. After the migration from the old TIN-NSDL system, the same payment is made through the e-Pay Tax service on incometax.gov.in under the "Income Tax (other than companies)" flow. The type codes 100, 300 and 400 remain the same.

Yes. On incometax.gov.in you can use the pre-login "e-Pay Tax" option and authenticate with your PAN and a mobile OTP, without your account password. You still select the tax type and assessment year and pay through the same modes.

Net banking with authorised banks, debit card, UPI (subject to limits), a payment gateway (which may add charges), and NEFT/RTGS or Pay-at-Bank counter. Choose the mode that suits the amount — UPI has per-transaction limits, while NEFT/RTGS suits larger payments.

Advance Tax (code 100) is paid during the financial year in instalments when your total tax after TDS exceeds ₹10,000 — 15% by 15 June, 45% by 15 September, 75% by 15 December and 100% by 15 March. Self-Assessment Tax (code 300) is the balance tax, including any interest, paid after the year ends while filing your ITR. Regular Assessment Tax (code 400) is paid against a demand notice.

Use 100 (Advance Tax) for instalments paid during the year, 300 (Self-Assessment Tax) for the balance paid when you file the ITR, and 400 (Tax on Regular Assessment) only when the department has raised a demand after assessment. Using the wrong minor head can stop the payment from setting off in your return.

Code 400 is used to pay a tax demand raised by the Income-tax Department after it assesses or reprocesses your return (for example a notice under Section 156). You should only use 400 when responding to such a demand — routine year-end tax goes under 300 (self-assessment).

For income earned in FY 2025-26 (April 2025 to March 2026), select AY 2026-27 — for both advance tax and self-assessment tax. The assessment year is always one year after the financial year. Advance tax on FY 2026-27 income uses AY 2027-28. Selecting the wrong AY causes a mismatch in Form 26AS and your ITR.

If it is the same day and same bank, ask the bank to modify or cancel the challan before it uploads. Otherwise use the "Challan Correction" facility under Services on incometax.gov.in within the allowed window. If the error is found after your ITR is processed, file a rectification request under Section 154 with your Assessing Officer.

Usually 3-5 working days for net banking, UPI and debit-card payments. NEFT/RTGS can take 7-10 days. If it has not appeared after 10 days, check the challan status on the income tax portal or the protean (TIN) challan status enquiry using the BSR code, challan serial number and date from your receipt.

The BSR code identifies the bank branch that processed the payment and the challan serial number identifies your specific transaction. Together with the payment date they uniquely identify your challan, and you enter them in the "Taxes Paid" schedule of your ITR so the payment is credited to you. Always save the challan receipt.

Yes. If tax is still payable after TDS and advance tax, you must pay the balance as self-assessment tax (code 300) under Section 140A before submitting the return — the ITR cannot be validly filed with tax still due. Once paid, enter the challan details in the return.

Under the new tax regime, which is the default from AY 2026-27, a resident individual with taxable income up to ₹12,00,000 pays nil tax after the Section 87A rebate (about ₹12.75 lakh for a salaried person after the ₹75,000 standard deduction). If your income is within that limit and TDS covers everything, you may have no self-assessment tax to pay — but you may still need to file a return to claim any refund.

No. Advance tax is due only when your total tax liability after TDS exceeds ₹10,000 in the year. If TDS already covers your tax (common for salaried people with no other income), you have no advance-tax obligation. It typically arises with capital gains, interest, rent, business or freelance income not fully covered by TDS.

You pay interest. Section 234C charges interest for shortfalls in each instalment, and Section 234B charges interest if less than 90% of the tax is paid by year-end. You can still pay the shortfall as advance tax (100) before 31 March, or as self-assessment tax (300) with interest when filing the ITR.

UPI is supported on e-Pay Tax subject to per-transaction limits, and a payment-gateway option accepts cards (a gateway may levy convenience charges, and credit-card acceptance depends on the gateway). For large amounts, net banking or NEFT/RTGS is usually the cleaner route. Always download the challan receipt after any mode.
