Quick Answer

You can download your e-PAN free from incometax.gov.in → Instant e-PAN → Check Status / Download e-PAN using your Aadhaar number and the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile. The downloaded PDF is password-protected — the password is your Date of Birth in DDMMYYYY format (e.g. 15 March 1985 → 15031985). The e-PAN is a digitally signed, QR-coded document that is legally equivalent to a physical PAN card. NSDL (Protean) and UTIITSL also let you download it, free within a short window and for a nominal ~Rs 8.26 fee afterwards.

NSDL/UTIITSL ~Rs 8.26
Beware fake "PAN download" fee sites

The instant e-PAN service on incometax.gov.in is free. Third-party sites that charge Rs 200-500 to "download your PAN" are unnecessary — use only the official income tax portal, or the NSDL/Protean and UTIITSL portals, where the fee is only a nominal ~Rs 8.26 after the free download window.

Where to download

PAN Card Download — Portal Comparison

Three official routes to download your PAN. The income tax portal is free; which of NSDL/UTIITSL you use usually depends on where you originally applied.

Step by step

How to Download e-PAN from the Income Tax Portal

The fastest free route needs nothing but your Aadhaar (linked to an active mobile) and an OTP. No login or password is required to start.

Open the portalincometax.gov.in → Instant e-PAN
Check status / downloadChoose the download tile
Enter Aadhaar12-digit Aadhaar number
Verify OTPOTP on Aadhaar-linked mobile
Download PDFFree, digitally signed e-PAN
  • Aadhaar number handy
  • Mobile linked to Aadhaar & active
  • Access to the OTP on that mobile
  • Date of birth (for the PDF password)
  • A PDF reader (Adobe) to open the file
  • PAN number, if downloading via UTIITSL/NSDL
Lost only the physical card? Skip the reprint

If your PAN is active and you have merely misplaced the physical card, you do not need to order a paid reprint for digital use. Download the free e-PAN from the income tax portal and use it for bank KYC, ITR filing and GST — it is legally valid. Order a physical reprint only if a specific office insists on the plastic card.

e-PAN PDF Password & Common Errors

The e-PAN PDF is encrypted. The password is your Date of Birth in DDMMYYYY format — eight digits, no spaces or slashes.

Date of BirthPDF Password
15 March 198515031985
01 January 200001012000
09 December 199209121992

For a non-individual PAN (company/firm), the password is the date of incorporation/formation in the same DDMMYYYY format.

If the password does not work

Double-check the DOB exactly as recorded against your PAN (not your Aadhaar if they differ). Open the PDF in a proper reader such as Adobe Acrobat rather than inside a browser preview. If it still fails, re-download a fresh copy from the portal, or contact the NSDL/Protean or UTIITSL helpline.

Use e-PAN when

  • You need PAN for ITR, GST or bank KYC now
  • Your physical card is lost or damaged
  • You want an always-available digital copy
  • A QR-verifiable PDF is accepted

Order a physical card when

  • A specific office insists on the plastic card
  • You need to update name / DOB (use a correction, not just a download)
  • You never received the original card after applying
Is it valid?

Is e-PAN Legally Valid — and Getting a New / Duplicate PAN

A Gazette notification (2018) recognises the e-PAN as legally equivalent to a physical PAN. It carries a QR code with encrypted details for instant verification and is accepted for bank KYC, income tax and GST. If you do not yet have a PAN, apply first; if the card is lost, you can either download the free e-PAN or order a reprint.

  • New PAN: apply via NSDL/Protean (Form 49A) or UTIITSL, or get an instant e-PAN free on the income tax portal if you have Aadhaar with an active mobile and no existing PAN.
  • Duplicate / reprint: your PAN number stays the same; order a reprint via NSDL/UTIITSL for a new physical card, or just download the e-PAN for digital use.
  • Correction: to change name, DOB or spelling, file a PAN correction application — a download alone will not fix wrong details.
  • Aadhaar link: keep PAN–Aadhaar linking current, or the PAN can become inoperative and downloads/OTP may fail.
PAN vs TAN — do not confuse them

PAN identifies a taxpayer; TAN is a separate number required by anyone who deducts TDS. You cannot use one in place of the other — a business often needs both a PAN and a TAN.

PAN Card Download — Frequently Asked Questions

Downloading
How can I download my PAN card online for free?
Download the e-PAN free from incometax.gov.in: open the portal, click Instant e-PAN under Quick Links, choose Check Status / Download e-PAN, enter your Aadhaar number and the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile, then download the PDF. It is a digitally signed, QR-coded e-PAN and is completely free on the income tax portal. NSDL/Protean and UTIITSL also allow downloads, free within a short window after allotment/update and for a nominal ~Rs 8.26 fee afterwards.
What is the password to open the e-PAN PDF?
The e-PAN PDF is password-protected. The password is your Date of Birth in DDMMYYYY format — eight digits with no spaces or slashes. For example, a DOB of 15 March 1985 gives the password 15031985, and 01 January 2000 gives 01012000. For a non-individual PAN, use the date of incorporation/formation in the same format.
The PDF password is not working — what should I do?
First confirm the date of birth exactly as recorded against your PAN (which may differ from Aadhaar). Enter it as DDMMYYYY with no separators. Open the file in a full PDF reader such as Adobe Acrobat rather than a browser preview. If it still fails, download a fresh copy from the portal, or contact the NSDL/Protean or UTIITSL helpline.
Can I download PAN using only my Aadhaar number?
Yes, on the income tax portal. The Instant e-PAN download needs only your Aadhaar number and the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile — no PAN login or password. Your Aadhaar must be linked to an active mobile number. On UTIITSL you typically enter the PAN and date of birth instead.
Is there any fee to download my PAN card?
On the income tax portal the instant e-PAN download is free. NSDL/Protean and UTIITSL allow free downloads within a short window after PAN allotment or update, and charge a nominal fee of about Rs 8.26 afterwards. Avoid third-party websites that charge Rs 200-500 to "download PAN" — use only the official portals.
How long does it take to download an e-PAN?
It is instant. Once you enter your Aadhaar and verify the OTP on the income tax portal, the digitally signed e-PAN PDF is generated and available to download within a minute or two. There is no waiting period for the electronic copy — only a physical reprint takes 15-20 working days.
Validity
Is the e-PAN card legally valid as ID and for KYC?
Yes. A 2018 Gazette notification recognises the e-PAN as legally equivalent to a physical PAN card. It carries a QR code with encrypted details for verification and is accepted for bank KYC, income tax filing, GST registration and most official purposes. If a particular office insists on the physical card, a colour printout of the e-PAN is usually accepted.
Do I need to order a physical PAN card if I have the e-PAN?
Not for digital use. The e-PAN is valid for ITR, GST, bank KYC and most transactions, so if your card is only lost or damaged you can simply download the free e-PAN. Order a physical reprint only if a specific authority requires the plastic card. A reprint keeps your existing PAN number unchanged.
Is the QR code on the e-PAN important?
Yes. The QR code on the e-PAN stores your PAN details in encrypted form so that banks and offices can verify authenticity instantly using a QR reader. Always keep the full colour PDF (or its colour printout) rather than a black-and-white copy so the QR code remains scannable.
New & Duplicate
How do I apply for a new PAN if I do not have one?
You can apply through NSDL/Protean using Form 49A (Indian citizens) or through UTIITSL, or get an instant e-PAN free on the income tax portal if you have Aadhaar linked to an active mobile and no existing PAN. Aadhaar-based instant e-PAN is issued within minutes; a physical card via NSDL/UTIITSL takes around 15-20 working days.
My PAN card is lost or damaged — how do I get a duplicate?
Your PAN number never changes. For digital use, download the free e-PAN from the income tax portal. For a fresh physical card, apply for a reprint through NSDL/Protean or UTIITSL (a small fee applies), which is delivered by post in about 15-20 working days. If the details are also wrong, file a correction rather than a plain reprint.
How do I correct my name or date of birth on PAN?
Downloading the e-PAN will not fix wrong details — you must file a PAN correction application (Form 49A correction) through NSDL/Protean or UTIITSL with supporting proof. Once the correction is processed, download the updated e-PAN. This is separate from a simple reprint or download.
Can I have two PAN cards or hold more than one PAN?
No. Holding more than one PAN is not allowed and can attract a penalty under the Income-tax Act. If you accidentally hold two PANs, surrender the extra one. Losing your physical card does not create a second PAN — you keep the same number and simply download the e-PAN or order a reprint.
Linking & Related
Do I need to link PAN with Aadhaar to download the e-PAN?
Your Aadhaar must be linked to an active mobile number to receive the OTP for the download. Separately, PAN-Aadhaar linking is mandatory — if your PAN has become inoperative because it is not linked, downloads and OTP-based services may fail until you complete the linking. Keep PAN-Aadhaar linking current.
What is the difference between PAN and TAN?
PAN (Permanent Account Number) identifies a taxpayer for income tax, while TAN (Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number) is required by anyone who deducts or collects TDS/TCS. They are different numbers and cannot be used interchangeably — many businesses need both a PAN and a TAN.
Can I use the e-PAN for GST registration and income tax filing?
Yes. PAN is the base identifier for both income tax and GST, and the e-PAN is accepted for GST registration, ITR filing and related verifications. Your GSTIN and tax records are linked to your PAN, so a valid, active PAN (in e-PAN or physical form) is sufficient for these processes.
