Quick Answer

You must verify your ITR within 30 days of e-filing (reduced from 120 days w.e.f. 1 August 2022, CBDT Circular 16/2022). The quickest way is Aadhaar OTP; you can also use net banking, a pre-validated bank or demat account (EVC), TOTP or a DSC, or post a signed ITR-V to CPC Bengaluru. An unverified ITR is treated as invalid — as if never filed — and no refund is processed.

For companies, LLPs and taxpayers under tax audit, verification by DSC is mandatory. Confirm the live steps at incometax.gov.in before verifying.

Filing is not complete until you verify

A successfully submitted ITR is still incomplete until verified. If you verify within 30 days, your original filing date holds. If you verify after 30 days (with condonation), the verification date becomes the filing date — which can trigger belated-return status and a Section 234F late fee.

Fastest route

e-Verify via Aadhaar OTP — Step by Step

Aadhaar OTP is the most-used method and takes under two minutes if your mobile number is linked to your Aadhaar.

Log inPAN & password at incometax.gov.in
e-Verify Returne-File → Income Tax Returns → e-Verify
Generate OTP6-digit OTP to Aadhaar mobile
SubmitReturn verified · email acknowledgement
  • Go to incometax.gov.in and log in with your PAN and password.
  • Open e-File → Income Tax Returns → e-Verify Return and pick the unverified ITR.
  • Choose "OTP on mobile number registered with Aadhaar" and click Generate Aadhaar OTP.
  • Enter the 6-digit OTP and Submit — a success message and EVC acknowledgement are emailed to you.
Pre-condition: PAN–Aadhaar link

Your PAN must be linked with your Aadhaar and your mobile number must be updated in Aadhaar, or the OTP method will not work. If PAN is inoperative, link it first, then verify. Check status at incometax.gov.in.

Offline Verification — ITR-V to CPC Bengaluru

If you cannot e-verify, sign and post the one-page ITR-V acknowledgement to the Centralised Processing Centre within 30 days of filing.

  • Download the ITR-V (one-page PDF) from View Filed Returns
  • Print on plain A4 paper
  • Sign in the marked box with blue ink only
  • Do not fold, staple or write elsewhere
  • Send by ordinary or speed post — India Post only
  • Wait for the CPC confirmation email

Address: CPC, Income Tax Department, Post Bag No. 1, Electronic City Post Office, Bengaluru – 560 100, Karnataka. Private couriers are not accepted; use Speed Post and keep the tracking number. CPC processing takes about 5–15 days from receipt.

Post within the 30-day window

The date of dispatch (speed post) is taken as the date of submission of ITR-V. Even by post, it must leave within 30 days of e-filing — a late ITR-V is treated the same as no verification.

Consequences

What Happens If You Do Not Verify?

The Income Tax Department treats an unverified return as non-est — legally as if it was never filed. The practical fallout:

SituationConsequence
ITR not verified within 30 daysInvalid — treated as never filed
Refund claimed but unverifiedRefund not processed
Loss carry-forward claimedCarry-forward denied
Verified after 30 days (condonation granted)Verification date becomes filing date — 234F fee may apply
No verification, filing window closedApply for condonation u/s 119(2)(b) or file ITR-U

If you have missed the window entirely, you may still be able to file a belated return, or an Updated Return (ITR-U) within the extended timeline.

You are fine if

  • You verified within 30 days by any method
  • Your PAN is linked with Aadhaar and operative
  • You kept the ITR-V speed-post tracking number

Act now if

  • 30 days have passed and the ITR is still unverified
  • Your refund is stuck on an unverified return
  • You claimed losses you need to carry forward

ITR Verification — Frequently Asked Questions

Deadline & Basics
Within how many days must I verify my ITR?
You must verify your ITR within 30 days of e-filing. This window was reduced from 120 days with effect from 1 August 2022 (CBDT Circular No. 16/2022). If you verify within 30 days, the original filing date is retained. If you verify after 30 days, the date of verification is treated as the date of filing, which can make the return belated and attract a Section 234F late fee.
Is filing an ITR complete without verification?
No. Submitting the return on the e-filing portal is only the first step. The filing is not complete until it is verified. Until then the Income Tax Department treats the return as non-est — legally as if it was never filed — and it is not taken up for processing or refund.
What happens if my ITR is not verified within 30 days?
The ITR is treated as invalid, as if it was never filed. Any refund claimed will not be processed, carry-forward of losses is denied, and you may attract late-filing consequences under Section 234F if the original due date has passed. You may then need to file a fresh return, a belated return, an Updated Return (ITR-U), or request condonation of delay.
Does verifying late reset my filing date?
Yes. If you verify after the 30-day window (where condonation is granted), the date of verification becomes the date of filing. If that date falls after the due date, the return becomes belated and a Section 234F late fee can apply. Verifying within 30 days keeps your original filing date intact.
e-Verify Methods
What is the easiest method to e-verify ITR?
Aadhaar OTP is the easiest and most instant. Log in to incometax.gov.in, go to e-Verify Return, select "Generate Aadhaar OTP", and enter the 6-digit OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile. The ITR is verified instantly. Your PAN must be linked with Aadhaar and your mobile updated in Aadhaar.
How many ways are there to e-verify an ITR?
There are six electronic methods: Aadhaar OTP, net banking EVC, pre-validated bank account EVC, pre-validated demat account EVC, TOTP (authenticator app), and Digital Signature Certificate (DSC). In addition, you can verify offline by posting a signed ITR-V to CPC Bengaluru.
How do I e-verify using net banking?
Log in to the e-filing portal, choose e-Verify Return, select "Through Net Banking", pick your bank, and you are redirected to your bank's net-banking login. After logging in, click the link to the income tax e-filing portal, which generates an EVC and verifies your return instantly.
What is EVC and how do I generate it?
EVC (Electronic Verification Code) is a 10-digit alphanumeric code used to verify your ITR. It can be generated through a pre-validated and EVC-enabled bank account or demat account, or through net banking. Once generated, entering the EVC on the portal verifies your return.
Can I verify my ITR without a smartphone or internet?
Yes. If you cannot e-verify electronically, print the one-page ITR-V acknowledgement, sign it in blue ink, and send it by ordinary or speed post to CPC, Income Tax Department, Post Bag No. 1, Electronic City Post Office, Bengaluru – 560 100, within 30 days of filing. Only India Post is accepted — do not use private couriers.
Is DSC verification mandatory for anyone?
Yes. Companies, LLPs and taxpayers whose accounts are subject to tax audit must verify their return using a registered Digital Signature Certificate (DSC). For most individual taxpayers, DSC is optional and Aadhaar OTP or EVC is simpler.
ITR-V & Offline
What is ITR-V?
ITR-V (Income Tax Return – Verification) is a one-page acknowledgement generated after you file your return. If you do not e-verify, you print, sign and post it to CPC Bengaluru as physical proof of verification. Download it from e-File → Income Tax Returns → View Filed Returns → Download ITR-V.
How should I sign and post the ITR-V?
Print the ITR-V on plain A4 paper, sign only inside the signature box using blue ink, and do not fold, staple or write anywhere else. Send it by ordinary or speed post (India Post only) to CPC Bengaluru within 30 days of filing. Keep the speed-post tracking number as proof of dispatch.
How long does CPC take to confirm ITR-V?
CPC generally processes a received ITR-V in about 5 to 15 days and then emails a confirmation to your registered email address. The date of dispatch of the ITR-V (speed post) is taken as the date of submission, so post it well within the 30-day window.
Late & Corrections
Can I e-verify an old unverified ITR after 30 days?
After the 30-day window the ITR is already treated as invalid. You must request condonation of delay under Section 119(2)(b) from the CBDT or your jurisdictional Commissioner; if granted, you can then verify the return. Alternatively, file a fresh or belated return if the window is open, or an Updated Return (ITR-U) within the permitted timeline.
My refund is stuck — could it be a verification issue?
Very likely. A refund is only processed after the return is verified. If your ITR shows as submitted but not verified, verify it immediately (Aadhaar OTP is fastest). Once verified within time, the return is picked up for processing and the refund follows after assessment at CPC.
Do I need to verify a revised or belated return too?
Yes. Every return you file — original, belated, revised or updated (ITR-U) — must be separately verified within 30 days of that filing. Verifying an earlier return does not verify a later revision; each filing has its own 30-day verification clock.
