Every pre-packaged food sold in India must carry a label that complies with the FSS (Labelling & Display) Regulations, 2020 under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Mandatory declarations include the name of the food, complete ingredient list, nutritional information, the veg/non-veg symbol, the FSSAI logo with your 14-digit licence/registration number, net quantity, best-before/expiry (date marking), batch/lot number, allergen information and full manufacturer/packer details. A non-compliant or misleading label can attract penalties and product recall — so labels should be checked before artwork goes to print. Our experts review your label and deliver print-ready compliant artwork.
2020
Labelling regulationsThe FSS (Labelling & Display) Regulations, 2020 replaced the 2011 packaging & labelling rules and set the current mandatory declarations for pre-packaged food.
Understand It

What Is FSSAI Label Compliance?

A quick, plain-language explanation before the details.

In simple terms

FSSAI label compliance means your packaged-food label carries every declaration the law requires — food name, ingredients, nutrition, the veg/non-veg mark, the FSSAI logo with your 14-digit number, net quantity, date marking, batch number, allergens and manufacturer details — presented correctly so it can be sold legally.

Legally

Labelling of pre-packaged food is governed by the FSS (Labelling & Display) Regulations, 2020, framed under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The regulations prescribe the mandatory declarations, the manner of display, the veg/non-veg symbol, date-marking rules and restrictions on claims and misleading representations.

Governing authority

Administered by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Your FSSAI licence/registration is obtained through the Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS) portal at foscos.fssai.gov.in, and the 14-digit number is what appears on the label.

Validity

A label review is a point-in-time compliance check against the current regulations. It should be repeated whenever the recipe, pack size, claims or artwork change, or when the labelling rules are amended.

Why It Matters

Why Does FSSAI Label Compliance Matter?

A packaged-food label is a legal document, not just design. Here is why getting it right before you print matters.

  1. 01

    Legal Requirement

Every pre-packaged food must carry the mandatory declarations under the FSS (Labelling & Display) Regulations, 2020. A missing or wrong declaration makes the product non-compliant.

  2. 02

    Avoid Recalls & Penalties

Non-compliant or misleading labels can attract penalties, product withdrawal and recall — a costly outcome once stock is already printed and in the market.

  3. 03

    Marketplace Acceptance

Amazon, Flipkart, BigBasket and quick-commerce platforms reject or delist products whose labels miss FSSAI declarations or the veg/non-veg mark.

  4. 04

    Consumer Trust

A clear FSSAI logo, honest ingredients and a readable nutrition panel build consumer confidence and protect your brand’s credibility.

  5. 05

    Right First Time

Fixing a label after the print run means scrapped packaging and lost time. A pre-print review catches issues while changes are still cheap.

  6. 06

    Export & Import Ready

Imported food needs an India-compliant label before customs clearance, and exporters often need a retail label that satisfies FSSAI as well.

What Information Is Needed to Review a Label?

A label review works from your product recipe, nutrition data and current artwork. Share clear files (PDF/AI/JPG) — everything is collected securely over WhatsApp or email, with zero office visits.

Choose an information group

Product & Recipe

What the label must declare
4 documents
  • Full ingredient list in descending order of weight
  • Any additives / preservatives / colours used (with class & INS)
  • Whether the product is vegetarian or non-vegetarian
  • List of allergens present or possible in the product

Veg / non-veg symbol is mandatory

Every pre-packaged food must show the correct symbol — a green dot in a green square for vegetarian and a brown triangle in a brown square for non-vegetarian — sized and placed as the regulations require.

FSSAI logo + 14-digit number

The FSSAI logo must appear with your 14-digit licence/registration number on the label. Selling with a wrong, missing or another party’s number is a labelling default.

No misleading claims

Nutrition and health claims are regulated. Words like “natural”, “pure” or “no added sugar” must meet the prescribed conditions — we flag claims that need wording changes or evidence.

Check before you print

Get the label reviewed before the print run. Correcting a compliant declaration on paper is cheap; scrapping printed packaging after a market complaint is not.

Artwork correction & final sign-offDepends on design turnaround

A first-pass audit is usually completed within a few working days of receiving your label and product data. Overall turnaround depends on how quickly recipe/nutrition inputs are shared and on your designer’s revisions. Complex packs with many claims or multiple SKUs take longer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What must a packaged food label show under FSSAI rules?
Under the FSS (Labelling & Display) Regulations, 2020 a pre-packaged food label must show the name of the food, the complete list of ingredients in descending order of weight, nutritional information, the veg/non-veg symbol, the FSSAI logo with the 14-digit licence/registration number, net quantity, best-before/expiry (date marking), batch or lot number, allergen information and the name and complete address of the manufacturer, packer or importer.
Which regulation governs food labelling in India?
Labelling of pre-packaged food is governed by the FSS (Labelling & Display) Regulations, 2020, framed under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. These 2020 regulations replaced the earlier packaging and labelling provisions of the 2011 regulations and set out the current mandatory declarations and display requirements.
Is the veg / non-veg mark mandatory on every pack?
Yes. Every pre-packaged food must carry the correct symbol — a green filled dot inside a green square outline for vegetarian food, and a brown filled triangle inside a brown square outline for non-vegetarian food. The symbol must be prominently displayed close to the name of the food, in the size the regulations prescribe.
Does the FSSAI logo have to appear with a number?
Yes. The FSSAI logo must be displayed on the label along with your 14-digit licence or registration number. Showing the logo without the number, showing a wrong number, or using someone else’s number is a labelling default and can lead to penalties and delisting on marketplaces.
What allergen information must a label declare?
Where a product contains any of the notified major allergens — such as cereals containing gluten, crustaceans, eggs, fish, peanuts, soybeans, milk, tree nuts and certain others — this must be declared on the label. If there is a chance of cross-contamination, a precautionary allergen statement is used. We review your recipe and flag what must be declared.
What nutritional information is required on the label?
The nutritional information panel must generally declare energy value and the amounts of protein, carbohydrate, total sugars, total fat and other nutrients as required, expressed per 100 g or 100 ml (and per serving where a serving size is declared). Products making specific claims may need to declare additional nutrients relevant to that claim.
Do imported foods need an FSSAI-compliant label?
Yes. Imported pre-packaged food must carry an India-compliant label meeting the FSS (Labelling & Display) Regulations, 2020 before it is cleared and sold. This includes the mandatory declarations, the veg/non-veg mark, the FSSAI details, allergen information and the country of origin, which can be applied as a sticker or reprinted where permitted.
What happens if my label is not compliant?
A non-compliant or misleading label can attract penalties under the FSS Act, product withdrawal or recall, and rejection or delisting on e-commerce and quick-commerce platforms. Because packaging is printed in bulk, discovering a defect after printing is expensive — which is why labels should be reviewed before the print run.
Can I make claims like “natural” or “no added sugar”?
Nutrition and health claims, and words such as “natural”, “pure”, “fresh” or “no added sugar”, are regulated and can only be used when the prescribed conditions are met. Unsubstantiated or misleading claims can render a label non-compliant. We flag any claim that needs a wording change or supporting evidence.
Do I need an FSSAI licence before I can label a product?
Yes. The 14-digit number that appears on the label comes from your FSSAI registration or licence, obtained on the FoSCoS portal. You need a valid registration or licence for your food business first; label compliance is the next step that makes the individual product legally saleable.
How is date marking shown on a food label?
Most pre-packaged foods must show a date of manufacture or packing along with a “best before” or “use by/expiry” date, in the format the regulations specify. The applicable form of date marking depends on the food category and its shelf life. We check that the correct date-marking format and the batch/lot number are present.
Do you also design the artwork or only review it?
We can do both. We review your existing or draft label against the regulations and, where needed, correct the ingredient text, nutrition panel and declarations and prepare print-ready compliant artwork with your designer or ours — so the final file is both compliant and ready to print.
How long does a label compliance review take?
A first-pass compliance audit is usually completed within a few working days of receiving your artwork, recipe and nutrition data. The overall turnaround depends on how quickly the product inputs are shared and on the design revisions needed, and complex packs with many claims or multiple SKUs take longer.
What is the minimum font size for mandatory declarations on a food label?
The FSS (Labelling & Display) Regulations, 2020 prescribe a minimum height for the letters and numerals of mandatory declarations, generally not less than 1 mm (measured from the lowercase “o”), scaled up for larger packs and for the net-quantity declaration. Declarations must be legible, indelible and clearly visible against the background. We check that your artwork meets the minimum size and contrast rules.
What is the penalty for a misbranded or misleadingly labelled food?
Selling misbranded food attracts a penalty of up to ₹3 lakh under Section 52 of the FSS Act, 2006, while a misleading advertisement or claim can attract a penalty of up to ₹10 lakh under Section 53. Penalties are imposed by an Adjudicating Officer, and non-compliant stock can also be withdrawn or recalled, so labels should be corrected before printing.
Is Front-of-Pack Nutrition Labelling (FOPNL) mandatory in India?
FSSAI has been finalising Indian Nutrition Rating (INR), a star-based front-of-pack nutrition labelling scheme, through draft regulations. Until it is notified and in force, FOPNL is not yet a mandatory declaration, but brands should track the rollout because it will change the front panel. We advise on the current requirements and flag upcoming FOPNL changes for your category.
How should added colours, flavours and additives be declared on the label?
Additives must be declared by their class name followed by the specific name or INS number — for example “Preservative (INS 211)” or “Colour (INS 110)”. Added flavours are declared as natural, nature-identical or artificial flavouring substances, and a special declaration such as “CONTAINS ADDED FLAVOUR” or “CONTAINS PERMITTED SYNTHETIC FOOD COLOUR” is required where applicable. We correct additive wording to match the regulations.
Do fortified foods need the +F logo and a specific declaration?
Yes. Foods fortified in line with the FSS (Fortification of Foods) Regulations, 2018 must carry the “+F” fortification logo and the tagline, along with a declaration of the added micronutrients and their quantities. The logo and declaration signal genuine fortification, so they should only be used when the product actually meets the fortification standards.
