About PAN AO Code

PAN AO Code identifies the Income Tax Assessing Officer responsible for your tax assessment. It has 4 components: Area Code (e.g. MUM), AO Type (W, C etc.), Range Code (number), and AO Number (number). Required in Form 49A when applying for a new PAN.
Salary income: use your employer's office address. Business/other income (not salary): use residential address. Companies, partnerships, trusts: always use office/registered address.
Try alternate spellings (e.g. "Bangalore" vs "Bengaluru", "Bombay" vs "Mumbai"). If still not found, contact your local Income Tax office for the correct AO jurisdiction.
Check your previous ITR acknowledgement — it shows AO details. Or log into incometax.gov.in → My Profile to see your current jurisdiction.
Army: Area Code PNE, AO Type W, Range Code 55, AO Number 3. Air Force: Area Code DEL, AO Type W, Range Code 72, AO Number 2. These are fixed codes per NSDL guidelines.
