Quick Answer

An HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) code is a 4-, 6- or 8-digit number that classifies goods on a GST invoice; SAC (Services Accounting Code) does the same for services and always starts with 99. Type your product or service above to get the code and rate. On the invoice you must show 4 digits (₹1.5–5 Cr B2B), 6 digits (above ₹5 Cr), and 8 digits for every import/export.

Up to ₹1.5 Cr Optional
₹1.5–5 Cr 4-digit
Above ₹5 Cr 6-digit
Import/Export 8-digit

How the HSN Code Finder Works

The finder matches your search against a curated set of common HSN and SAC codes: it looks at the code prefix (type a number like 8517), the description, and a list of keywords (type a plain word like "mobile", "salon" or "consulting"). It returns the code, whether it is HSN (goods) or SAC (service), a short description and the indicative GST rate for FY 2025-26. Rates are indicative by heading — always confirm the exact notification at cbic-gst.gov.in before invoicing.

How Many HSN Digits Must You Show?

The number of HSN digits you print depends on your aggregate turnover in the previous financial year. Import and export documents always need the full 8-digit ITC-HS code.

Turnover (previous FY)HSN digitsOn GSTR-1 / invoice
Up to ₹1.5 croreOptionalRecommended, not mandatory
₹1.5 crore – ₹5 crore4-digitMandatory for B2B invoices
Above ₹5 crore6-digitMandatory on all invoices
Import / export (any turnover)8-digitAlways mandatory (ITC-HS)

First 6 digits of HSN are internationally harmonised (WCO). India uses 8-digit ITC-HS for customs. Verify at cbic-gst.gov.in.

Wrong HSN can break your buyer’s ITC

A wrong HSN code causes GSTR-1 errors and an ITC mismatch for your buyer, and can trigger scrutiny. There is no fixed monetary penalty for a wrong HSN, but fix it by amending GSTR-1 in the next return period — repeated mismatches invite demand notices.

HS Code vs HSN Code — same system

“HS Code” and “HSN Code” refer to the same Harmonised System. In India “HSN Code” is the GST term, while “HS Code” / ITC-HS (8-digit) is used in customs and DGFT trade contexts. For GST invoicing use 4 or 6 digits as applicable; for import/export use the 8-digit ITC-HS.

HSN Code Finder — FAQs

Basics
Where do I find the HSN code for my product?
Use the HSN Code Finder tool at the top of this page — type your product name or a partial HSN number and it returns the code and GST rate. For the complete official list, search at cbic-gst.gov.in under Tax/Rate > HSN/SAC, or use Services > User Services > Search HSN/SAC Code on the GST portal.
What is the difference between HSN and SAC codes?
HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) codes classify goods — physical products you manufacture or trade. SAC (Services Accounting Code) codes classify services. Both are mandatory on GST invoices and GSTR-1. HSN codes are numeric (4, 6 or 8 digits); SAC codes are 6-digit codes starting with 99.
Are HSN codes the same internationally?
The first 6 digits of HSN are internationally harmonised under the World Customs Organization (WCO) standard, used by 200+ countries. India uses 8-digit ITC-HS codes for customs (import/export). For GST invoicing, 4 or 6 digits are required, and the first 4–6 digits of Indian HSN align with the international codes.
What is the difference between an HS code and an HSN code?
They refer to the same Harmonised System. “HSN Code” is the common GST term in India; “HS Code” (and the 8-digit ITC-HS variant) is used in customs and DGFT trade contexts. For GST invoicing you use 4 or 6 digits; for import/export you quote the 8-digit ITC-HS code.
Digits & invoicing
How many HSN digits are mandatory on a GST invoice?
It depends on previous-year turnover: up to ₹1.5 crore HSN is optional (but recommended); ₹1.5–5 crore requires 4 digits on B2B invoices; above ₹5 crore requires 6 digits on all invoices. Imports and exports always require the full 8-digit ITC-HS code.
Is HSN code mandatory for B2C invoices?
For B2C invoices, HSN is mandatory only if annual turnover exceeds ₹5 crore (6-digit HSN). Between ₹1.5 crore and ₹5 crore, 4-digit HSN is mandatory for B2B but may not be required on B2C. Below ₹1.5 crore, HSN is optional on invoices but recommended for accuracy.
How many digits of HSN do I report in GSTR-1?
The HSN summary in GSTR-1 follows the same rule: 4 digits for turnover of ₹1.5–5 crore (B2B) and 6 digits for turnover above ₹5 crore. Table 12 of GSTR-1 now validates HSN entries, so the code must match your invoices.
Rates & errors
What happens if the wrong HSN code is used on an invoice?
A wrong HSN code can cause GSTR-1 filing errors, an ITC mismatch for your buyer and potential scrutiny. Correct it by filing an amended GSTR-1 in the next period. There is no specific monetary penalty for a wrong HSN, but repeated mismatches can trigger audit notices and demand proceedings.
Does the HSN code decide the GST rate?
Yes — the GST rate is notified against the HSN heading. Two products in the same broad chapter can carry different rates depending on the specific 6- or 8-digit heading. Always confirm the exact rate for your heading against the current CBIC rate notification before invoicing.
Did GST 2.0 change HSN rates?
The GST 2.0 rationalisation (effective 22 September 2025) restructured many goods and services into a simplified slab system, so several rates changed even though the HSN codes themselves did not. Use the current rate for your heading and verify at cbic-gst.gov.in — the code stays the same, the rate may differ from older charts.
Do exporters need an 8-digit HSN code?
Yes. Exports and imports must quote the full 8-digit ITC-HS code on shipping bills, bills of entry and export invoices, regardless of turnover. The 8-digit ITC-HS classification is maintained by DGFT and is more granular than the 4/6-digit HSN used for domestic GST invoicing.
How accurate is this HSN Code Finder?
The finder covers common products and services with indicative FY 2025-26 rates to help you locate the right code quickly. It is a reference, not the official database — always confirm the exact heading and current rate at cbic-gst.gov.in or the GST portal before issuing invoices.
