GST Calculation Formula

Calculation TypeFormulaExample at 18%
Add GST (exclusive → inclusive)GST = Amount × Rate/100
Total = Amount + GST
₹1,000 × 0.18 = ₹180
Total = ₹1,180
Remove GST (reverse — inclusive → exclusive)Base = Total ÷ (1 + Rate/100)
GST = Total − Base
₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000
GST = ₹180
Intrastate split (CGST + SGST)CGST = GST/2
SGST = GST/2
CGST = ₹90
SGST = ₹90

Frequently Asked Questions

How to calculate GST on ₹1,000?
At 18% GST: GST amount = ₹1,000 × 18/100 = ₹180. Total price with GST = ₹1,180. CGST = ₹90, SGST = ₹90 (for intrastate supply). For interstate supply: IGST = ₹180. Use the calculator above to compute any amount and rate instantly.
What is reverse GST calculation?
Reverse GST calculation finds the base price (excluding GST) from a GST-inclusive amount. Formula: Base price = GST-inclusive price ÷ (1 + GST rate/100). Example: If GST-inclusive price is ₹1,180 at 18%: Base = ₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000. GST = ₹180.
How is CGST/SGST split?
For intrastate (within same state) supply: GST is split equally between CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST). So 18% GST = 9% CGST + 9% SGST. For interstate supply or imports, IGST (Integrated GST) applies at the full rate (18% IGST). CGST goes to central government; SGST goes to state government.
Which GST rate applies to my product?
The GST rate depends on the HSN code of your product. Common rates: essential food and medicines at 5%; processed food and textiles at 12%; services and electronics at 18%; luxury goods and tobacco at 28%. Special rate: gold at 3%. Use our HSN Code Finder tool to look up rates for specific products.
Is GST on MRP inclusive or exclusive?
For most consumer goods, the MRP printed on the product is GST-inclusive. The GST shown on the bill is already included in the MRP. However, for business-to-business (B2B) transactions, prices are usually quoted exclusive of GST — GST is added separately on the invoice.
