What Is TDS Return Filing?
A quick, plain-language explanation before the details.
TDS return filing is the quarterly statement a deductor files after deducting tax at source, so the deducted tax shows up as a credit in each deductee's Form 26AS.
Under the Income-tax Act, 1961, every person who deducts tax at source must hold a TAN and file quarterly statements — Form 24Q (salary), 26Q (resident non-salary), 27Q (non-resident) and 27EQ (TCS) — with the prescribed particulars of deduction and deposit.
Administered by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT); returns are filed on the income-tax e-filing portal and processed on TRACES, using the Protean (NSDL) RPU and File Validation Utility (FVU).
Filing is a recurring quarterly obligation for as long as you deduct tax — there is no expiry. Returns must be filed even for quarters, once you hold a TAN and deduct.

Talk to an Expert →Why Is TDS Return Filing Important?
Timely, accurate TDS returns protect your deductees' tax credit and keep your TRACES record clean. Here is why it matters.
-
01
Avoid the 234E Fee
File each quarter on time to avoid the ₹200/day late-fee under Section 234E, which is capped at the TDS amount.
-
02
Deductee Gets Credit
Only a filed return reflects TDS in the deductee's Form 26AS — a late return blocks their tax credit and refund.
-
03
Clean TRACES Record
Error-free statements mean no short-deduction or short-payment defaults raised against you on TRACES.
-
04
Form 16 / 16A on Time
Processed returns let you download and issue Form 16 (salary) and Form 16A (non-salary) certificates.
-
05
Challan Reconciliation
Every challan is matched to the statement so deposited TDS maps correctly to each deductee.
-
06
No 271H Penalty
Accurate, timely filing avoids the ₹10,000–₹1,00,000 penalty under Section 271H for late or incorrect returns.

- Lower / nil deduction certificate (Form 13), if any
Valid TAN is mandatory
Every deductor must hold a TAN to deduct tax and file returns. TDS challans and statements are filed against the TAN, not the PAN.
Correct PAN is critical
An invalid or missing deductee PAN triggers higher TDS under Section 206AA and a short-deduction default on TRACES. We verify each PAN before filing.
FVU validation before filing
Every quarterly return must pass through the File Validation Utility (FVU) or the income-tax portal will reject it. We validate each statement before submission.
Deposit before you file
TDS must be deposited by the 7th of the next month (March deductions by 30 April). The challan (CIN) is needed to prepare the return.
File even for a nil quarter
Where you hold a TAN but had no deductions, file a declaration for non-filing on TRACES to avoid unnecessary notices.
