TDS compliance is a deductor’s duty to deduct tax at source on specified payments — salary (192), contractor (194C), professional/technical fees (194J), rent (194I), commission (194H), interest (194A) and purchase of goods over ₹50 lakh (194Q) — then deposit it and report it. TDS must be deposited by the 7th of the next month (by 30 April for March deductions), quarterly returns filed in Form 24Q / 26Q / 27Q, and Form 16 / 16A issued to deductees. A valid TAN is required before any deduction.

Deposit deadlineDeducted TDS must be deposited by the 7th of the next month (by 30 April for March deductions). Late deposit attracts interest under Section 201(1A) and late-filing of returns attracts a fee of ₹200/day under Section 234E.
Understand It

What Is TDS Compliance?

A quick, plain-language explanation before the details.

In simple terms

TDS compliance is a deductor’s duty to deduct tax while making specified payments, deposit it with the Government by the due date, file quarterly returns and issue TDS certificates to the deductees.

Legally

TDS is governed by Chapter XVII-B of the Income-tax Act, 1961. Each payment is mapped to a section (192, 194C, 194J, 194I, 194H, 194A, 194Q, 195 and others) with its own rate and threshold, and the deducted tax is reported in quarterly statements.

Governing authority

Administered by the Income Tax Department, with returns filed and certificates downloaded through TRACES (tdscpc.gov.in) and challans paid on the e-filing / TIN portal.

Validity

The deductor must hold a valid TAN before deducting. Deposits are due by the 7th of the next month (30 April for March) and returns each quarter, with Form 16/16A issued after filing.

Why It Matters

Why TDS Compliance is Important

Correct, on-time TDS deduction, deposit and return filing protects your expense deductions, keeps deductees’ credit clean and avoids interest and penalties. Here is why it matters.

  1. 01

    Avoid Disallowance

30% of an expense can be disallowed under Section 40(a)(ia) if TDS is not deducted or not deposited on time.

  2. 02

    No Interest Leakage

Section 201(1A) charges 1% per month for short/non-deduction and 1.5% for non-deposit until it is paid.

  3. 03

    Clean 26AS Credit

Accurate returns ensure deductees see their TDS credit in Form 26AS / AIS — no disputes or grievances.

  4. 04

    Correct Section & Rate

Right section (192/194C/194J/194I/194Q) and rate avoids short-deduction demands from TRACES.

  5. 05

    Timely Deposits

TDS deposited by the 7th of the next month (30 April for March) means no interest under 201(1A).

  6. 06

    No 234E Late Fee

Returns filed on time avoid the ₹200/day late-filing fee under Section 234E and penalty under 271H.

Checklist

What Documents Are Required for TDS Compliance?

Requirements are grouped by deductor details, deduction/challan and deductee data. Keep clear scans (PDF/JPG) ready — everything is collected securely online, and we provide a checklist matched to your return type (24Q/26Q/27Q).

Choose a document group

Deductor Details

About the deductor
5 documents
  • TAN of the deductor
  • PAN of the deductor / business
  • Name, address & category of deductor
  • Contact details of the responsible person
  • Previous quarter’s TDS return (if any)

TAN is mandatory

You must hold a valid TAN before deducting TDS. It is quoted on every challan, return and certificate — deducting without a TAN attracts penalty.

Deposit by the 7th

Deducted TDS must be deposited by the 7th of the next month, and by 30 April for March deductions. Late deposit attracts interest under Section 201(1A).

Valid deductee PAN

Where a deductee does not furnish a valid PAN, higher TDS applies under Section 206AA (up to 20%). Correct PANs also ensure clean 26AS credit.

Right return form

Use 24Q for salary, 26Q for other resident payments and 27Q for non-resident payments. We select the correct form for each quarter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is TDS and when must it be deducted?
TDS is tax deducted at source at the time of credit or payment on specified payments — salary (192), rent over ₹50K/month by individuals (194-IB), professional fees over ₹30K/year (194J), contractor payments (194C) and more. The deductor must hold a valid TAN before deducting.
What is the due date for TDS payment?
Deducted TDS must be deposited by the 7th of the next month for all months except March — TDS deducted in March is due by 30 April. Late deposit attracts interest of 1.5% per month under Section 201(1A) from the date of deduction to the date of deposit.
What are the TDS return filing deadlines?
Quarterly returns are due Q1 by 31 July, Q2 by 31 October, Q3 by 31 January and Q4 by 31 May. Late filing attracts a fee of ₹200 per day under Section 234E, capped at the TDS amount, plus a possible penalty under Section 271H.
What is the difference between 24Q, 26Q and 27Q?
Form 24Q is the quarterly return for TDS on salary (Section 192). Form 26Q is for TDS on other payments to residents (194C, 194J, 194I, 194H, 194A and others). Form 27Q is for TDS on payments to non-residents (Section 195). We select the correct form for each quarter.
What is Form 16 and who issues it?
Form 16 is the salary TDS certificate issued by the employer, generally by 15 June. Part A shows TDS deducted and deposited; Part B shows the salary breakup. It is downloaded from TRACES and used by the employee to file their ITR. Form 16A is the equivalent for non-salary payments.
What is Form 26AS?
Form 26AS is the annual tax credit statement showing all TDS deducted against your PAN, advance tax and self-assessment tax paid. Deductees should reconcile it (along with the AIS) to confirm their TDS credit before filing their ITR.
What if TDS was deducted but not deposited?
The deductee can raise a grievance on TRACES or with the jurisdictional TDS Assessing Officer. Credit is available to the deductee only after the deductor deposits the TDS and files the quarterly return reflecting it. The deductor also pays interest under Section 201(1A).
What interest and penalties apply for TDS defaults?
Interest under Section 201(1A) is 1% per month for non/short deduction and 1.5% per month for non-deposit. Late return filing attracts a ₹200/day fee under Section 234E (capped at the TDS amount) and a penalty of ₹10,000 to ₹1,00,000 under Section 271H. Wilful non-payment can attract prosecution under Section 276B.
When is TDS required on purchase of goods (194Q)?
A buyer whose turnover exceeded ₹10 crore in the preceding year must deduct TDS at 0.1% under Section 194Q on purchase of goods from a resident seller above ₹50 lakh in a financial year. TCS under 206C(1H) and TDS under 194Q cannot both apply to the same transaction.
What is a lower TDS deduction certificate?
Form 13 is applied for by a taxpayer whose actual tax liability is lower than the standard TDS rate, allowing tax to be deducted at a lower or nil rate. The certificate is issued on the TRACES portal and is valid for the financial year specified.
Do I need a TAN for TDS compliance?
Yes. A TAN (Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number) is mandatory before deducting TDS. It is quoted on every challan, return and certificate. Deducting or depositing TDS without a TAN attracts a penalty. We obtain or correct your TAN as part of the service.
Can excess TDS be claimed as a refund?
Yes. For a deductee, excess TDS is reflected as a tax credit when they file their ITR, and any excess over their liability is refunded to their PAN-linked bank account. A deductor who has deposited excess TDS can claim it through the TRACES refund process.
Who must deduct TDS under the Income-tax Act?
Any person making a specified payment above the threshold must deduct TDS — companies, LLPs, firms and, in many cases, individuals or HUFs whose accounts were audited in the preceding year. Employers deduct salary TDS under Section 192, and business payers deduct on contractor (194C), professional (194J), rent (194I) and interest (194A) payments. A valid TAN is required before deducting.
What are the TDS rates for common payments?
Broadly, salary (192) is deducted at the employee’s slab rate; contractor payments (194C) at 1% (individual/HUF) or 2% (others); professional or technical fees (194J) at 10% (2% for technical services); rent of land or building (194I) at 10%; and purchase of goods over ₹50 lakh (194Q) at 0.1%. Rates and thresholds change, and higher TDS applies under Section 206AA where the deductee has no PAN.
What is the difference between TDS and TCS?
TDS is tax the payer deducts from a payment before releasing it, reported in Form 24Q/26Q/27Q. TCS is tax the seller collects from the buyer at the point of sale under Section 206C, reported in Form 27EQ. They are separate compliances, though both require a TAN and are deposited by the 7th of the next month.
When must TDS be deducted — on payment or on credit?
For most sections, TDS must be deducted at the time of credit to the payee’s account or at the time of actual payment, whichever is earlier. Salary under Section 192 is an exception, deducted at the time of payment. Deducting late attracts interest under Section 201(1A) from the date it should have been deducted.
How do I correct an error in a filed TDS return?
You file a correction (revised) statement on TRACES using the consolidated (conso) file and the original token number — not a fresh return. Corrections fix a wrong deductee PAN, a challan mismatch, a wrong section or missing deductee rows, so the deductee’s 26AS/AIS credit is restored and TRACES defaults are cleared.
