PF Transfer Online — How to Transfer EPF When Changing Jobs (Form 13)
Updated: 3 June 2026 | EPFO Unified Portal | One Member One EPF Account
To transfer EPF online (Form 13): Log in at unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in with your UAN → Online Services → One Member One EPF Account (Transfer Request) → select previous employer’s Member ID → choose old or new employer for attestation → submit. Transfer completes in 15–20 working days. Prerequisite: UAN must be active and KYC (Aadhaar + PAN + bank) must be digitally approved.
15–20
Working days for EPF transfer to complete after employer approval.
Transferring instead of withdrawing preserves your EPS (Employees’ Pension Scheme) service continuity — critical for the 10-year qualifying period for pension.

Requirements Before Starting PF Transfer Online
- Active UAN: Your Universal Account Number must be activated at the Unified Member Portal. Both old and new employers should be linked to the same UAN.
- KYC approved: Aadhaar, PAN, and bank account must be seeded to UAN and show status “Digitally Approved by Employer” under Manage → KYC.
- Aadhaar-linked mobile: Your mobile number must be linked to Aadhaar for OTP authentication during the transfer request.
- Old employer ECR filed: The previous employer must have deposited EPF contributions via ECR (Electronic Challan cum Return). If contributions are missing, the transfer amount will be incomplete.
- New employer enrolled: Your current employer must have enrolled you in EPFO and the Member ID must appear in your UAN profile before submitting the transfer.
How to Transfer PF Online Step by Step
Use the One Member One EPF Account module on the Unified Portal to submit Form 13 digitally. No physical form submission is required.
-
Log in to unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in
Enter your UAN and password. Complete the captcha and log in. If you have not activated your UAN, click “Activate UAN” on the homepage and follow the OTP process. -
Go to Online Services → One Member One EPF Account (Transfer Request)
From the top menu, click Online Services and select One Member – One EPF Account (Transfer Request). This is the Form 13 online submission module. -
Verify your personal details and current employer
The page auto-fills your name, date of birth, and current employer (new company). Verify these details are correct. If there are discrepancies, do not proceed — correct them first via KYC update or joint declaration. -
Select previous employer’s Member ID
Click “Get Details” to load previous employer accounts linked to your UAN. Select the Member ID for the account you want to transfer from. If an old account is missing, first link it to your UAN via the Member ID Seeding option. -
Choose employer for attestation
You can choose either your current employer (new company) or previous employer to digitally attest the claim. Choosing the current employer is faster in most cases as you have easy access to HR. Select and click “Get OTP”. -
Enter OTP and submit
Enter the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number. Click Submit. You will receive a claim reference number via SMS. Save this for tracking. -
Employer approves the claim
The designated employer (old or new, whichever you selected) must log in to their Employer Portal and approve the transfer request. Follow up with HR if approval is delayed beyond 3–5 working days.
Auto-Transfer of EPF — What Gets Transferred Automatically?
Since 2022, EPFO introduced automatic transfer for small EPF balances in certain scenarios when a new employer registers you under the same UAN. However, this auto-transfer is not universal:
- Auto-transfer may apply only when the UAN is the same and Aadhaar is seeded correctly, and is triggered at the back end by EPFO.
- For complete and confirmed transfer of both EPF and EPS service records, it is recommended to always file Form 13 online manually.
- Auto-transfer does not guarantee EPS service continuity — manual Form 13 ensures both EPF balance and pension service years are correctly credited.
PF Transfer vs PF Withdrawal — Which Should You Choose?
| Factor | Transfer (Form 13) | Withdrawal |
|---|---|---|
| Changing jobs in India | Recommended | Not recommended (tax + EPS loss) |
| Tax on amount | No tax on transfer | Taxable if withdrawn before 5 years of continuous service |
| EPS (pension) service continuity | Preserved — years add up toward 10-year pension eligibility | Lost if withdrawn via Form 10C |
| Leaving India permanently | Not applicable | Full withdrawal allowed after 2 months of unemployment |
| Disability / serious illness | — | Full withdrawal allowed regardless of service period |
Tax Warning on Early Withdrawal: If you withdraw EPF before completing 5 years of continuous service (combined across employers if transfer was done), the entire EPF withdrawal amount is added to your income and taxed at slab rates. Additionally, TDS at 10% is deducted on withdrawals above ₹50,000. Transferring preserves the service count and avoids this tax.
Can’t Find Old Employer PF Account?
If an old employer’s Member ID is not showing in your UAN profile, use these methods to trace and link it:
- Via UAN portal: Log in → Manage → Previous Member ID. Enter your old employer’s EPFO Establishment Code and your old Member ID (both available on old payslips) to link the account.
- Old payslip: Your payslip from the old employer should mention the PF account number in the format: Establishment Code / Member ID (e.g., DL/CPM/123456/789).
- EPFO Helpdesk: Call the EPFO helpdesk at 1800-118-005 (toll-free) with your old UAN or PF number. They can help trace the account.
- Old employer’s HR: Contact your previous employer’s HR or payroll team for your Member ID and establishment code.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does EPF transfer take after submitting Form 13 online?
Typically 15–20 working days from the date the claim is approved by the employer (old or new, whichever you choose). The timeline can extend to 30–45 days if there are ECR discrepancies, pending KYC verification, or if the old establishment has compliance issues. You can track the transfer status at unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in under Online Services → Track Claim Status.
My EPF transfer claim is showing "Under Process" for more than 30 days — what should I do?
If the claim remains "Under Process" beyond 30 days, first check whether your employer has approved the request (you can see employer approval status in Track Claim Status). If employer approval is pending, follow up with your HR. If employer has approved but EPFO is still processing, raise a grievance at epfigms.gov.in citing your UAN, claim reference number, and submission date. For urgent cases, you can also visit the regional EPFO office with the claim reference.
What is a joint declaration and when is it needed for PF transfer?
A joint declaration (also called a joint request) is a physical form signed by both you and your employer to correct member data discrepancies — such as a name mismatch between the EPFO database and your Aadhaar/PAN. It is needed when your online transfer claim gets rejected due to data mismatch. Both you and your current or previous employer must sign the joint declaration and submit it to your regional EPFO office. Until the mismatch is resolved, online claims cannot proceed.
My EPF transfer was rejected — what are the common reasons and how to fix them?
Common rejection reasons: (1) KYC not approved — ensure Aadhaar, PAN, and bank account are all "Digitally Approved" in the Unified Portal; (2) Name/date-of-birth mismatch between EPFO records and Aadhaar — requires joint declaration; (3) Old employer ECR not filed — old employer must have deposited contributions; (4) Multiple accounts not seeded to UAN — all old Member IDs must be linked to your UAN before transfer. Re-submit after fixing the specific issue mentioned in the rejection SMS/notification.
How do I check if my PF transfer has been completed and credited?
Track transfer status at unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in → Online Services → Track Claim Status. Enter your UAN and the claim reference number. Status moves from "Submitted" → "Under Employer Review" → "Under EPFO Review" → "Settled". Once settled, the transferred amount appears in your new Member ID passbook (at passbook.epfindia.gov.in) within 3–5 working days. The transferred amount shows as a credit row with "Transfer In" in the description column.
