What Is IEC Registration?
A quick, plain-language explanation before the details.
An IEC is a 10-digit code that lets your business legally import goods and services into India or export them out — it is quoted on customs and bank documents for every trade transaction.
The Import Export Code is issued under the Foreign Trade (Development & Regulation) Act, 1992 and the Foreign Trade Policy. No person can import or export except under an IEC granted by the DGFT, unless specifically exempted.
Administered by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce & Industry, via the online portal dgft.gov.in. The IEC is now issued in the applicant’s PAN.
An IEC has lifetime validity — it does not expire. However, the holder must electronically update (confirm) the IEC details once every financial year, even if there are no changes, to keep it active.

Talk to an Expert →Why Is IEC Registration Required?
An IEC is the entry ticket to international trade for an Indian business. Here is why it matters.
-
01
Legally Mandatory
Import or export of goods (and most services) is not permitted without an IEC. It is the basic requirement to trade across India’s borders.
-
02
Customs Clearance
The IEC is quoted on the bill of entry and shipping bill — customs will not clear your import or export consignments without it.
-
03
Foreign Currency Transactions
Banks require the IEC to send remittances abroad for imports or to receive foreign exchange against exports.
-
04
Export Benefits & Incentives
An IEC is the gateway to schemes under the Foreign Trade Policy — RoDTEP, RCMC-linked benefits and other export incentives.
-
05
Access Global Markets
With an IEC you can onboard to global marketplaces and sell to buyers worldwide, unlocking cross-border growth.
-
06
One-Time, Lifetime Code
A single IEC covers all your trade transactions across India, with no renewal — only a simple annual electronic update.

Bank proof required
A cancelled cheque or a bank certificate in the business/applicant’s name is needed to establish the bank account linked to your IEC.
Address proof must be valid
A sale deed, lease/rent agreement, or a recent utility bill is accepted for the business address. Rented premises typically need a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from the owner.
DSC or Aadhaar e-sign
The application is submitted using a Digital Signature Certificate or an Aadhaar-based e-sign of the authorised signatory.
Update once every year
Even with no changes, the IEC must be electronically updated during April–June each financial year, or it can be deactivated.

| DGFT processing & IEC generation | 1–3 working days |
| Query / clarification (if raised) | Extends until resolved |
