What Is FSSAI for Trader / Distributor?
A quick, plain-language explanation before the details.
FSSAI registration for a trader or distributor gives your trading, wholesale, distribution, storage or transport business a 14-digit FSSAI number so you can legally handle and supply food, and so retailers and marketplaces will buy from you.
Under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and the FSS (Licensing & Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011, a "food business operator" includes anyone who trades, distributes, retails, stores, wholesales or transports food — not only manufacturers. Every such operator must obtain FSSAI registration or a licence appropriate to its turnover and scope.
Administered by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) through the Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS) portal at foscos.fssai.gov.in, which replaced the older FLRS portal.
FSSAI registrations and licences are perpetual since 1 April 2026 — the old 1–5 year renewal cycle is replaced by an annual fee plus the annual Food Safety Compliance Report (FSCR) on FoSCoS. Older certificates were issued for 1 to 5 years.

Talk to an Expert →Why Do Traders & Distributors Need FSSAI?
You may not cook or manufacture, but handling and supplying food still makes FSSAI mandatory. Here is why it matters for traders and distributors.
-
01
Legal Requirement
FSSAI covers every food business operator — traders, wholesalers, distributors, retailers, storage and transport. Handling food without a valid registration or licence is an offence.
-
02
Retailers Demand It
Retailers, distributors and other traders will not buy from you without your 14-digit FSSAI number on your invoices and packaging.
-
03
Marketplace Listing
Amazon, Flipkart, Swiggy, Zomato and B2B marketplaces require a valid FSSAI number before they let you list or supply packaged food.
-
04
Multi-State Supply
Distributors and wholesalers supplying across states generally need a Central Licence — getting the tier right keeps your supply chain compliant.
-
05
Buyer & Consumer Trust
A valid FSSAI number on your supply signals that your sourcing and handling are compliant — key for winning larger buyers.
-
06
Avoid Penalties
Trading or distributing food without a valid FSSAI can attract a penalty of up to ₹5 lakh and/or business closure by the authorities.

| State Licence — with premises inspection | ~2–4 weeks |
| Central Licence — multi-state / importer, inspection | ~3–4 weeks |
Basic Registration typically completes in about 7–10 days. State and Central licences take longer because they involve a physical inspection of your shop, godown or warehouse. Queries from the food authority, or incomplete documents, extend the timeline until they are resolved.
