What Is Copyright Registration?
A quick, plain-language explanation before the details.
Copyright registration records your ownership of an original work — a book, song, artwork, software, film or sound recording — in the government Register of Copyrights, giving you documented proof you can rely on in disputes.
Copyright is a bundle of exclusive rights granted under the Copyright Act, 1957 over original literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works, cinematograph films and sound recordings. Copyright subsists automatically on creation; registration under Section 45 is optional but the Register of Copyrights is prima facie evidence of the particulars entered in it.
Administered by the Copyright Office under the Registrar of Copyrights (part of the CGPDTM ecosystem), via the online portal copyright.gov.in.
For literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works, copyright lasts the author’s lifetime plus 60 years. For films, sound recordings, photographs and anonymous/posthumous works, it is 60 years from the year of publication.

Prima Facie Evidence
The entry in the Register of Copyrights is prima facie evidence of ownership and of the particulars in it — a strong starting point in any infringement dispute.
-
02
Legal Protection
A registered copyright makes it far easier to establish ownership and pursue civil and criminal remedies against copying and piracy.
-
03
Monetise Your Work
Copyright is a valuable asset you can license, assign or sell — clear registered ownership makes commercial deals cleaner.
-
04
Protect Software & Code
Computer programmes are protected as literary works — registration documents your ownership of source code and applications.
-
05
Long Duration
Protection lasts the author’s life plus 60 years (60 years from publication for films and sound recordings) — long-term security for your work.
-
06

What You’ll Receive
What Documents Are Required for Copyright Registration?
Requirements depend on the type of work and whether the applicant is the author. Keep clear scans (PDF/JPG) and copies of the work ready — everything is collected securely online.
Applicant / Author
Owner or author of the work- Name, address & nationality of the applicant
- Identity proof of the applicant (PAN / Aadhaar / passport)
- Details of the author — and whether author = applicant
- If applicant is not the author: assignment / NOC from the author
- Power of Attorney (if filed through an agent / attorney)
The Work
Copies of the work being registered- Copies of the work (soft & hard copy as applicable)
- Title of the work & language
- Nature / class of the work (literary, artistic, software, music, film, sound recording)
- Year & details of first publication (published / unpublished)
- For software: source code & object code extracts
Special Cases
Additional consents where relevant- If the work uses a trademark / artistic logo: NOC / trademark search report
- If the work is used on goods: NOC from the trademark owner where applicable
- For artistic works used commercially: relevant declarations
- For films / sound recordings: NOC from copyright owners of underlying works
- Authorisation / consent of any person whose work is incorporated
A copy of the work is essential
You must submit copies of the actual work being registered — the manuscript, artwork, audio, video or, for software, the source code and object code extracts. Keep both soft and hard copies ready.
Author vs owner
If the applicant is not the author (for example an employer or a buyer of the rights), a signed assignment deed or No-Objection Certificate from the author is required.
NOC for logos & trademarks
If an artistic work is or contains a logo/trademark, the Copyright Office may require a trademark search report or a NOC to confirm there is no conflict.
Separate application per work
Each distinct work generally needs its own application and fee. Related works are not automatically covered by a single filing.
