Frequently Asked Questions
Is PAN-Aadhaar linking mandatory for everyone?
Yes, PAN-Aadhaar linking is mandatory for all PAN holders who possess an Aadhaar number. Exemptions apply only to NRIs, super senior citizens (above 80 years), residents of Jammu/Kashmir/Ladakh, and foreign citizens without Aadhaar.
What if my name is different on PAN and Aadhaar?
Minor variations in name (spelling, initials, middle name) are usually auto-matched by the system. For major mismatches, you need to first correct the name on either your PAN card (via NSDL/UTIITSL) or Aadhaar card (via UIDAI portal) before attempting to link.
Can I link PAN with Aadhaar without a mobile number linked to Aadhaar?
No. OTP verification on the Aadhaar-linked mobile is mandatory for linking. If your mobile number is not updated in Aadhaar, visit the nearest Aadhaar Enrolment Centre to update it first, then proceed with PAN-Aadhaar linking.
How long does it take for PAN to become operative after linking?
After successful PAN-Aadhaar linking, the PAN is reactivated within 30 days. During this period, the PAN may still show as inoperative. You can check the updated status on the IT portal after 30 days.
Will I get a refund of the ₹1,000 late fee if I link PAN-Aadhaar?
No. The ₹1,000 late fee is non-refundable. It is a penalty for not linking within the prescribed deadline. Once paid, it cannot be claimed back or adjusted against any tax liability.
