Frequently Asked Questions
How to check if a GSTIN is valid?
Visit taxpayersearch.gst.gov.in, enter the 15-digit GSTIN, complete the captcha, and click Search. If the GSTIN is valid and active, the portal will display the registered business name, state, registration type, principal place of business, and current status (Active/Cancelled/Suspended). If the GSTIN does not exist or is structurally incorrect, the portal will show an error. You can also do a basic structural check: a valid GSTIN must start with a 2-digit state code (01–38), followed by a 10-character PAN, then 1 entity digit, the letter Z, and a check digit.
What information can I see in a GSTIN search?
A GSTIN search on taxpayersearch.gst.gov.in shows: (1) Legal name of the business, (2) Trade name (if different), (3) State of registration, (4) Registration type (Regular, Composition, Input Service Distributor, Non-Resident, etc.), (5) Principal place of business address, (6) Date of registration, (7) GSTIN status — Active, Cancelled, or Suspended, and (8) Whether the taxpayer has opted for Composition Scheme. No login is required to view this information.
How to find the GSTIN of a supplier?
You can find a supplier's GSTIN from: (1) Their GST invoice — GSTIN is mandatory on every GST invoice, (2) Their GST registration certificate, (3) The GST portal: taxpayersearch.gst.gov.in — search by GSTIN if you already have it, (4) If you only know the PAN, you can use the GSTIN search by PAN option on gst.gov.in under Services → Search Taxpayer → Search by PAN. A business may have multiple GSTINs if registered in multiple states — one per state.
What does 'Cancelled' status mean in a GSTIN search?
A "Cancelled" status means the GST registration for that GSTIN has been cancelled — either voluntarily by the taxpayer (e.g., business closed or turnover below threshold) or by the GST officer for non-compliance (e.g., non-filing of returns, fake registration). A Cancelled GSTIN is no longer valid for issuing GST invoices. You should not accept invoices from a supplier with a Cancelled GSTIN as Input Tax Credit (ITC) on such purchases will not be available. "Suspended" status means the registration is temporarily inactive, often pending an inquiry.
Can I check the GST return filing status of a supplier?
Yes. On taxpayersearch.gst.gov.in, after entering a valid GSTIN, you can see the filing status including whether the taxpayer has filed recent GSTR-3B and GSTR-1 returns. Additionally, on gst.gov.in → Services → Returns → View Filed Returns, you can check the filing history. For ITC purposes, a supplier's GSTR-1 filing is critical — only if the supplier files GSTR-1 will their invoices appear in your GSTR-2B, allowing you to claim Input Tax Credit.
