What is BIS?
Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is India's national standards body. BIS certification ensures product quality, safety, and consumer protection under the BIS Act, 2016.
Types of BIS Certification
CRS (Compulsory Registration Scheme) — for electronics/IT products. ISI Mark — for industrial/consumer products. FMCS — for foreign manufacturers. Hallmark — for jewellery.
CRS Mandatory Products
200+ products including mobile phones, laptops, LED lights, set-top boxes, power banks, chargers, cables, toys. List updated by MeitY/BIS periodically.
ISI Mark Products
Cement, steel, electrical cables, LPG cylinders, helmets, water purifiers, packaged drinking water, and 900+ other products.
Process Overview
Product testing at BIS-recognized lab → Application on BIS portal → BIS factory visit/audit → License grant → Affix BIS mark on product.
Timeline
CRS: 30–60 days after successful testing. ISI: 3–6 months including factory audit. FMCS: 3–5 months for overseas manufacturers.
Renewal
CRS renewal: annually. ISI: biennial with quarterly surveillance visits. Hallmark centers: annually. FMCS: as per schedule.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Selling uncertified mandatory products: ₹2 lakh to ₹5 lakh fine + imprisonment up to 2 years. Products seized and destroyed.
