SEBI revamps its Document Number Verification System: subject matter of the letter now a mandatory field
SEBI has modified the system that lets a recipient check whether a letter or notice was really issued by SEBI. The ‘Subject Matter’ of the letter is now one of the mandatory fields, and the system follows the outward number format of SEBI’s E-Office. Letters issued before the revamped system went live in September 2026 can be verified by e-mail to dnvs@sebi.gov.in.

What SEBI has announced
By Press Release PR No. 60/2026 dated 1 October 2026, the Securities and Exchange Board of India has announced a revamp of its Document Number Verification System. SEBI had launched the system in April 2025, with a press release on 3 April 2025 (PR No. 17/2025).
Two changes have been made, which SEBI says are to strengthen and increase the credibility of the authentication:
- the ‘Subject Matter’ of a SEBI letter is now one of the mandatory fields required for verification of a physical letter or notice; and
- the system has been aligned with the Outward Number format generated through the outward module of the E-Office system in SEBI.
What the system is for
The recipient of a SEBI letter — including notices and show cause notices — or any person on the recipient’s behalf can use the system to verify whether the letter was issued by SEBI. The verifier first validates his credentials and then enters the mandatory details of the letter.
Mandatory detail to be entered
---
Outward number
Name of the SEBI official issuing the letter
Date of the letter
Subject matter
Name of the recipient
SEBI adds a caution: such verification does not constitute a verification of the contents of the letter.
What the result means
- Correct details entered: the query returns a confirmation that the letter / communication with those details had been issued by SEBI.
- Otherwise: the system indicates that no record is found. The verifier is advised either to enter the correct details or to seek confirmation by sending an e-mail to SEBI at dnvs@sebi.gov.in.
Letters issued before September 2026
The revamped system is operationalised from September 2026. Any communication issued prior to that period may be verified by the recipient by sending an e-mail with the necessary details to dnvs@sebi.gov.in.
Where to find it
The system continues to be available on the home page of the SEBI website: www.sebi.gov.in → Home → Authenticate Document Number Issued by SEBI. The press release also carries a QR code for the web page, and a detailed Guidance Note on usage is available on that page.
What recipients of a SEBI letter should do
If you receive a physical letter, notice or show cause notice that claims to be from SEBI, keep the letter at hand and enter the five details exactly as they appear on it. If the system shows no record, re-check the entries, and if it still does not match, write to dnvs@sebi.gov.in. For a letter dated before the September 2026 revamp, use the e-mail route.
Questions and answers
How can I check whether a letter from SEBI is genuine?
